Vance looked at it.
His expression changed.
Only for a second.

Whitmore knew.
"You knew him."
Vance said nothing.
"Why?"

Marcus moved toward the courtroom doors.
Whitmore stopped him.
"No."
The judge looked at Vance.
"Let him speak."
Vance finally sat down.
"I didn't kill your son."
"I didn't ask whether you did."
The attorney swallowed.
"I knew Thomas."
"How?"
"He came to me."
"When?"
"Three days before he died."
"Why?"
Vance looked around the room.
"Because he had discovered the land records."
Whitmore's heart sank.
"What records?"
"The original acquisition documents."
The same documents now missing.
Thomas had found them seven years earlier.
