A Black Belt Champion Offered a Black Grandma $10,000 to Hit Him — Then His Trainer Saw Her Stance and Shouted, “Don’t Let Her Move.”
Chapter 4
"It means you have been spending money to convince yourself you are powerful."
She stepped closer.
"Perhaps you should spend some learning what power actually costs."
The crowd went silent again.
Chase looked at the money.
For years, money had meant success.
Now it felt like evidence.
Evidence of every video.
Every humiliating laugh.
Every stranger who had walked away with his head down.
He suddenly wondered how many of them had watched their own videos afterward.
How many had read the comments.
How many had pretended they didn't care.
Eleanor turned toward Isaiah.
"Let's go."
Chase watched her leave.
Something inside him wanted to stop her.
Not for another fight.
For an explanation.
But he didn't know what question to ask.
Samuel remained beside him.
"You should apologize."
Chase laughed bitterly.
"To her?"
"To everyone."
"That's impossible."
Samuel looked at him.
"No."
"You don't understand how many people there are."
"I understand."
Chase looked at the crowd.
Hundreds were still filming.
"Everyone is going to hate me."
Samuel shook his head.
"Some will."
"And the rest?"
"They'll wait to see what you do next."
Chase looked toward the road.
Eleanor and Isaiah were already disappearing into the crowd.
"Sam."
"What?"
"Do you think I can change?"
Samuel didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
"That's not the question."
"What is?"
"Are you willing to?"
Chase looked at the money.
For the first time in years, he had no clever answer.
When the Cameras Turned
The video was everywhere by midnight.
Not Chase's edited version.
The full recording.
Millions watched Eleanor step onto the mat.
Millions watched Chase mock her.
Millions heard Samuel shout:
"Stop!"
And then they watched the punch.
The clip was shared repeatedly.
But something unexpected happened.
People didn't just laugh at Chase.
They began talking about everything that came before the punch.
Former challengers appeared online.
A construction worker named Daniel said Chase had made fun of him for weeks after their encounter.
A young woman said she had asked the production crew not to upload her attempt because she had been embarrassed.
They uploaded it anyway.
A teenage boy said he had been promised that Chase would go easy.
Instead, the kick had knocked him down hard enough to crack a rib.
The stories continued.
At first Chase dismissed them.
"People are exaggerating."
Trevor sat across from him.
"Maybe."
"Some of them are lying."
"Maybe."
"Then why are you acting like they're all true?"
Trevor looked at him.
"Because some are."
Chase didn't answer.
Trevor opened his laptop.
"There are thirty-seven people in the last three years who contacted the production company asking for footage to be removed."
Chase stared.
"I never saw those requests."
"You weren't supposed to."
"Why?"
Trevor hesitated.
"Because the videos made money."
Chase leaned back.
For the first time, he realized that his success had not been built only by his own choices.
Other people had helped protect the machine.
They had filtered complaints.
They had selected victims.
They had encouraged humiliation.
They had called it entertainment.
Chase looked at the screen.
"How much did we make from those videos?"
Trevor told him.
Chase went silent.
Then he asked:
"How much did we pay the people?"
Trevor didn't answer.
"Exactly."
That night, Chase tried to record an apology.
He sat in front of the camera.
"My recent challenge has been taken out of context."
He stopped.
Deleted it.
He tried again.
"I want to clarify that all participants volunteered."
He stopped.
Deleted it.
Again.
"I apologize if anyone was offended."
Delete.
He stared at the screen.
Every sentence sounded like a lawyer had written it.
None sounded like regret.
Finally, he called Samuel.
No answer.
He called again.
Nothing.
The next morning, Chase drove to the Freeman Center.
He had never seen it before.
The building stood between a laundromat and a medical clinic in East Oakland.
The outside walls were faded.
The windows were old.
A temporary sign indicated that renovations were underway.
Inside, Samuel was repairing the floor.
Trevor was painting one wall.
Isaiah was sweeping.
Eleanor stood near a table covered with paperwork.
Everyone looked at Chase.
Nobody spoke.
Chase carried a cardboard box.
He placed it on the floor.
"What is that?" Samuel asked.
"Hard drives."
Samuel frowned.
"Why?"
"Every challenge video."
Trevor looked up.
"All of them?"
"All."
"What are you doing with them?"
"I'm contacting everyone."
"About?"
"Permission."
Samuel put down his hammer.
"And if they say no?"
"I remove the footage."
"And compensation?"
Chase nodded.
"I'll pay them."
Trevor stared.
"That could cost millions."
"I know."
Samuel studied him.
"Why?"
Chase looked around the unfinished center.
"I don't know how to fix what I became."
Eleanor remained silent.
Chase looked at her.
"I thought I wanted to be admired."
"You wanted to be feared."
"Maybe."
"You wanted people to think you were untouchable."
"Yes."
"And now?"
Chase looked down.
"Now I want to be someone I can respect."
Eleanor walked toward him.
"That will take time."
"I know."
"You may lose your career."
"I know."
"You may never get back what you had."
"I know."
She nodded.
"Good."
Chase looked confused.
"Good?"
"You finally understand the price."
She pointed toward a pile of broken floorboards.
"Work gloves are in the cabinet."
He looked at Samuel.
"That's it?"
Samuel smiled faintly.
"You expected a ceremony?"
"No."
"Then get to work."
For six weeks, Chase worked at the center.
No cameras.
No followers.
No applause.
He repaired floors.
Cleaned bathrooms.
Carried lumber.
Answered phones.
He contacted former participants.
Some screamed at him.
Some hung up.
One woman told him she never wanted to hear his voice again.
He respected that.
