"That doesn't prove anything."

"Are you serious?"

"Counterfeit products exist, sir."

Denise stared at him.

"Are you accusing me of buying counterfeit shoes?"

Victor shrugged.

"I'm saying I cannot establish their authenticity."

Amara finally stepped forward.

"May I see the shoes?"

Victor turned sharply.

"This does not concern you."

"I believe it does."

"Excuse me?"

Amara ignored him and addressed Denise.

"May I?"

Denise looked at her.

For a moment, she seemed uncertain.

Then she nodded.

"Please. Maybe you'll get further than I have."

Amara carefully lifted the right shoe.

She examined the heel.

The damage was worse than it had appeared from a distance. The internal support had separated from the outer structure, suggesting that the adhesive bonding process had failed.

She turned the shoe over.

The manufacturing code was clearly visible.

She knew the batch number.

She knew the production facility.

She even remembered the inspection meeting during which the factory had promised that the revised bonding process would eliminate the problem.

The promise had apparently been broken.

Amara looked up.

"These are genuine Ebony Elegance shoes."

Victor's face changed.

"How would you know that?"

Amara held the shoe carefully.

"The stitching pattern, the manufacturer's code, and the interior stamp are consistent with our production specifications."

Victor stared at her.

"Our?"

Amara realized her choice of words had attracted his attention.

She corrected herself.

"The company's."

Victor gave a dismissive laugh.

"Madam, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but unless you're a certified product inspector, I suggest you stay out of this."

Amara lowered the shoe.

"Have you checked the batch number?"

"We don't need to."

"Why not?"

"Because I know our merchandise."

"Then you should recognize the code."

Victor's jaw tightened.

"I've been managing luxury retail locations for seventeen years."

"That doesn't answer my question."

Sophia stepped forward.

"Maybe you should stop interfering."

Amara turned toward her.

"I'm asking the manager to verify a product before refusing a customer's refund."

Sophia rolled her eyes.

"You're making this worse."

Denise looked between them.

"Thank you," she said quietly to Amara. "At least somebody is listening."

Marcus was becoming increasingly agitated.

He placed both hands on the counter.

"We've been here for twenty minutes. My wife has explained everything. We have proof of purchase. Either give us our money back or get someone who knows what they're doing."

Victor's expression hardened.

"Sir, I will not be threatened in my own store."

Marcus stared at him.

"Nobody threatened you."

"Your tone is unacceptable."

"My wife's shoes broke. Your company sold them. What's unacceptable is you refusing to help."

Victor looked toward the security guard.

"Please ask this gentleman to calm down."

The guard approached.

"Sir, I need you to lower your voice."

Marcus turned.

"Are you kidding me?"

Denise touched her husband's arm.

"Marcus, please."

But Victor was not finished.

He lifted the shoe box and pushed it toward Denise.

"We cannot process this return."

"Why?"

"Because the merchandise has been compromised."

"By whom?"

"You could have damaged them after purchasing them."

Denise went completely still.

Then she slowly looked at her husband.

"Did he just accuse me of breaking my own shoes?"

Marcus's face darkened.

"Take that back."

Victor did not.

"I am simply protecting the company from fraudulent returns."

Amara felt something cold settle in her stomach.

The manager had moved beyond arrogance.

He was accusing a customer of dishonesty without evidence.

And he was doing it in front of an audience.

Amara looked at Denise.

"Do you remember when you purchased them?"

"October third."

"Who assisted you?"

"A young woman named Sophia."

Sophia immediately looked away.

Victor noticed.

"That's enough."

Amara turned toward the manager.

"Why don't you check the sales record?"

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"Because I don't have to justify every decision I make to you."

"You're refusing to investigate a legitimate complaint."

"I'm refusing to allow a stranger to dictate how I operate my store."

Amara nodded.

"Then perhaps someone higher up should review the situation."

Victor laughed.

"Someone higher up?"

"Yes."

"And who would that be?"

Amara looked directly at him.

"Someone responsible for the company."

Victor leaned forward.

"Let me make something clear. You have no authority here."

Amara's expression remained calm.

"Authority isn't always visible."

Victor stared at her.

He seemed unable to decide whether she was making a joke or threatening him.

Before he could respond, Marcus suddenly struck the counter with his palm.

"Enough!"

A display of small leather accessories rattled.

Several customers stepped back.

The security guard moved closer.

Denise grabbed her husband's arm.

"Marcus, stop!"

Marcus turned toward Victor.

"You're going to refund my wife. Right now."

Victor stepped away.

"Get him out of here."

The guard reached toward Marcus's shoulder.

Marcus jerked away.

"Don't touch me!"

The argument had become loud enough to attract attention from the street.

A small crowd began gathering beyond the glass entrance.

Amara noticed that Victor was no longer interested in resolving the complaint.

He was interested in winning.

He wanted the customers removed.

He wanted the argument to disappear.

And he wanted the people watching to believe that the couple was the problem.
