“People who weren't supposed to be there.”
Malcolm looked down at the documents.
“Did anyone ever write this policy?”
“No.”
“Then how was it enforced?”
“Through examples.”
“What examples?”
“Someone would be embarrassed at the desk. Someone would be delayed. Someone would be asked for extra identification. Someone would be told a reservation couldn't be found.”
Malcolm looked up.
“Did you complain?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“I was told I was making the hotel sound racist.”
“And after that?”
“I learned to keep copies.”
She pushed the folder across the table.
Malcolm opened it.
Emails.
Internal notes.
Employee messages.
A spreadsheet.
He read silently.
One message stood out.
Do not allow unusual high-value bookings to proceed without visual confirmation of guest profile.
There was no signature.
But Denise had highlighted it.
“Who wrote this?”
“Graham.”
Malcolm looked at Nina.
“Save everything.”
Denise nodded.
Then she added quietly:
“There is something you should know.”
“What?”
“The people at the desk aren't the real problem.”
Malcolm waited.
“Graham doesn't act alone.”
The Hidden Camera
At 8:15, Malcolm's team entered the temporary conference room.
Lawyers.
Accountants.
Investment advisers.
Operational consultants.
Everyone expected Malcolm to spend the morning discussing valuation.
Instead, he asked one question.
“Who owns the surveillance system at Valecrest?”
The hotel's legal counsel, Arthur Bell, looked confused.
“Surveillance?”
“Security cameras.”
“Yes.”
“Who has access?”
“Security and senior management.”
“Can footage be deleted?”
“Technically, yes. Automatically overwritten after thirty days unless preserved.”
Malcolm nodded.
“Then preserve last night's footage.”
Arthur frowned.
“Why?”
“Because I want to review it.”
Nobody spoke.
Malcolm continued.
“Every camera covering the front desk from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.”
Arthur looked uncomfortable.
“Was there an incident?”
“Yes.”
“What kind?”
“I was denied check-in.”
Several people stared at him.
The chairman, Edward Bell, finally spoke.
“You?”
Malcolm looked at him.
“Yes.”
Edward's face changed.
“Mr. Reid…”
Malcolm raised one hand.
“Don't.”
Edward stopped.
“Before we discuss anything else, I want the footage.”
Graham Voss was not in the room.
Clarissa was not in the room.
Evan was not in the room.
That was deliberate.
The lawyers began making calls.
At 8:47, the first report arrived.
The surveillance system showed the entire interaction.
Clarissa laughing.
Graham approaching.
Malcolm remaining calm.
The card authorization.
The refusal.
