seconds, he did not recognize her. Then his face changed completely. "No way," he muttered,
standing up so fast his chair rolled backward.
Claire smiled warmly. "Hi, Mike." He came around the desk and hugged her like an old
comrade. Derek, watching from across the gym with his friends, narrowed his eyes. Who was this
woman, and why was the gruff gym owner treating her with such reverence?
As Mike and Claire caught up, Derek couldn't resist his curiosity. He sauntered over,
interrupting their reunion. "Friend of yours?" Derek asked, looking Claire up and down.
Mike glanced at him, annoyance flashing in his eyes. "Yes." He introduced them reluctantly.
Derek extended his hand, sizing her up. Her grip was firm but gave away nothing. "So you train?"
Derek probed.
"Used to," Claire replied casually. "A little of everything."
Derek smirked. That answer usually meant recreational kickboxing or a few self-defense classes.
"What belt?"
