Brandon's smile tightened.

“You know,” he said, “most women should probably learn this stuff. Especially if they work nights.”

“Probably,” Lily replied, stacking the plates.

“What would you do if someone came up behind you?”

She continued toward the counter.

“Hopefully call the police.”

“Good luck calling the police if somebody already has you.”

The remark had changed the atmosphere. It was no longer an awkward conversation about self-defense. Brandon was standing in the aisle, demanding that a waitress explain how she would respond to a hypothetical attack while she was trying to finish her shift.

Kyle noticed the change in her expression.

“Come on, Brandon. Leave her alone.”

“I'm leaving her alone. I'm making a point.”

Lily set the plates on the counter.

“Brandon, I'm working.”

“Exactly. Five seconds. I'll show you something useful.”

“No.”

The word was quiet, clear, and final.

For a moment, Brandon appeared to consider letting it go.

Then his pride got in the way.

He stepped closer, wearing the same confident grin he used before a sparring match.

“Relax,” he said. “I'm not going to hurt you.”

“I said no.”

He had spent years teaching people that a person's skill meant nothing if they could not respect a boundary. He had also learned that certain men did not recognize a warning until somebody forced them to confront the consequences of ignoring it.

And this time, Walter did not look away.

At Iron Peak Martial Arts, confidence had helped him stand out among dozens of students. It had carried him through difficult tournaments, earned him a place beside the head instructor during demonstrations, and convinced younger fighters that he was someone worth following.

But confidence had another side, one Brandon rarely acknowledged. When someone challenged him, even in the smallest way, he felt an almost irresistible urge to prove that he could not be dismissed.

Lily Parker had done precisely that.

She had refused his demonstration, rejected his joke, and continued working as though his reputation meant nothing to her.

Brandon could not let the moment end without restoring the balance he believed she had disturbed.

“Come on,” he said, stepping into her path. “I'm trying to help you.”

“I don't need your help.”

“You haven't even seen what I'm offering.”

“And I don't want to.”

The diner had grown quiet enough for the conversation to carry across the room. Miguel, still inside the kitchen, glanced through the service window. Kyle sat forward in the booth, his amusement gone.

“Brandon,” he said, “seriously. Sit down.”

Brandon ignored him.

“Just stand here. I'll show you how quickly someone can control your movement. You don't have to do anything.”

“That makes even less sense than it did a minute ago.”

Lily tried to move around Brandon.

He moved with her.

“Stop,” she said.

For the first time, there was no humor in her voice.

Brandon heard it. Somewhere beneath his anger, he understood that he had pushed the interaction beyond an ordinary disagreement. He could have stepped aside, returned to his booth, and allowed everyone to forget the incident.

Instead, he mistook her fear of confrontation for an opportunity to regain control.

“See?” he said, reaching toward her shoulder. “You're already reacting before anything happens.”

Lily jerked away.

“Don't touch me!”

Her raised voice startled the truck driver, who had returned to the diner after realizing he had forgotten his wallet. He stopped near the entrance, watching.

Brandon's expression hardened.

“I'm not doing anything.”

“You're blocking my way.”

“Then move.”

“You're the one standing in front of me!”

The plates trembled in Lily's hands. She set them on the nearest table because she no longer trusted herself to hold them safely.

This time, she pushed his hand away.

The movement was instinctive, defensive, and brief.

But Brandon reacted as though she had challenged him in front of an entire tournament audience.

He stepped behind her and caught her in a chokehold.

For one stunned second, nobody moved.

Lily's hands flew toward his arm. Her eyes widened, and the plates on the table rattled as her hip struck its edge.

“See?” he announced, his voice unnervingly cheerful. “Now what are you going to do?”

The words transformed the moment.

This was no longer a demonstration that had gone wrong. It was a man deliberately restraining a woman who had repeatedly told him not to touch her, while demanding that she perform for the entertainment of his friends.

Lily struggled to pull his arm away.

“Let me go!”

“Relax. I've got control.”

“Brandon, release her!”

“Get your hands off her!”

“It's fine. We're demonstrating something.”

“She's telling you to let go!”

Lily tried to speak again, but the pressure around her neck made her words difficult to produce. Panic began replacing anger. She could feel the room narrowing around her, the familiar smells of coffee and fried food suddenly mixed with the sharp taste of fear.
