"Sergeant Danny Reyes," Cole said, reading the name tag pinned to his chest without asking. "You are currently standing in the middle of a federal perimeter that was established at the direct request of the Department of Justice. This checkpoint was created specifically so an undercover surveillance team could funnel a high-value cartel operative down Danforth Street without raising suspicion."

She stepped closer to Reyes, stopping mere inches from his chest.

"Agent Torres was deployed here to verify the line was clear and coordinate the physical handoff to our strike team three blocks north. Instead, you confiscated her badge, threw her in the back of a cruiser, and spent twenty-three minutes flexing your authority for your squad."

A suffocating silence descended over Danforth Street. The officers who had been laughing ten minutes earlier were now staring at the ground, desperately wishing they were anywhere else on earth. Junior looked as though he might throw up right onto his boots.

"I... I had no way to verify her credentials," Reyes stammered, his hands shaking as he gestured vaguely toward his vest. "She was dressed in civilian clothes... she didn't look like..."

"There is a direct 24-hour verification line laser-engraved onto the back of every federal credential case issued in this country," Cole interrupted, her voice dropping into a deadly whisper that cut deeper than any yell. "It takes forty seconds to dial. You chose not to dial it."

Cole reached out her hand, palm up, holding it steady in front of Reyes’s face. "Give me her badge."

Reyes’s hand flew to his vest pocket. His fingers were trembling so violently he struggled with the zipper for three agonizing seconds before pulling out the black leather case and dropping it into Cole’s open hand.

Cole opened the case, verified the shield, and handed it back to Agent Torres without taking her eyes off Reyes.

"Our follow unit managed to re-establish visual contact six minutes ago," Cole continued, addressing Torres. "The target realized he wasn't being tracked through Danforth, broke his routine, and pulled into an industrial storage facility off Route 9. We lost our window for a clean arrest, and now we’re looking at a high-risk tactical entry."

Torres strapped her badge case back onto her belt line, her face completely unreadable. "Then we need to move now. Route 9 is outside city limits."

"You’re not in condition to join the entry team," Cole noted, looking at Torres's marked wrists.

"I am perfectly fine," Torres replied firmly, walking straight toward the black Suburban. "And I’m the only one who has eyes on the secondary target's face. Let's go."

Before getting into the vehicle, Torres stopped and turned her head to look at Malik, who was standing quietly by her patrol car.

"Officer Malik," Torres called out.

Malik straightened her posture. "Yes, Agent Torres?"

"Make sure your captain gets an accurate timeline of everything that happened between 8:12 AM and 8:35 AM," Torres said. "Starting from the moment I handed my badge over."

"I’ve already logged it, ma'am," Malik answered clearly.

Torres nodded once—a subtle, genuine gesture of respect—then climbed into the rear seat of the Suburban.

Agent Cole turned back to Reyes one last time before stepping into her vehicle. "Sergeant, I suggest you return to your precinct immediately and notify your union representative. Internal Affairs will be waiting in your captain’s office before you even finish parking your car."

The black Suburban and the three unmarked sedans accelerated down Danforth Street, their strobe lights flashing brightly as they disappeared toward the highway, leaving the intersection completely silent once more.

Reyes stood alone in the center of the road, staring blankly at the empty street where the federal convoy had been parked seconds earlier.
