The metal side of the police cruiser had been baking under the relentless 95-degree July sun for hours, turning the white paint into an iron stove. When Officer Trent Mallerie forcefully drove twelve-year-old Aaliyah Brooks against the rear passenger door, heat punched straight through her thin yellow cotton t-shirt, blistering the skin between her shoulder blades. Her left cheek slammed hard against the tinted window glass. For one terrifying second, she saw her own reflection—wide, tear-filled brown eyes, a loose braid dangling across her face, and a look of sheer panic.

"Please!" Aaliyah gasped, her small voice cracking under the weight of his forearm. "You're hurting me! I didn't do anything!"

Mallerie didn't flinch. He tightened his heavy grip on her wrist, wrenching her arm up toward her shoulder blades. "Stop resisting!" he bellowed, his voice booming across the busy intersection of Laurel Street and North Mercer Avenue.

"I'm not resisting! I'm twelve!" she sobbed, her knees buckling against the hot pavement.

She weighed ninety-three pounds. The only thing in her hands had been a white paper pharmacy bag with a bright green logo printed across the front, containing her mother's prescription heart medication and her own allergy tablets. Under Mallerie's brutal shove, the paper tore open, and a prescription bottle slipped out, clattering onto the asphalt and rolling beneath the idling police car.

A small crowd began to gather on the sidewalk. A delivery driver slammed his brakes. A teenager riding a bicycle put his foot down, yanked out his smartphone, and started recording.

"She's just a kid! What is wrong with you?" a woman shouted from the bakery across the street.

Mallerie didn't even turn his head. He pressed his forearm onto Aaliyah's upper back, forcing her face to flatter against the scorching glass. "Everybody stay back! This is a lawful pedestrian stop!"

He didn't care about the cameras. He didn't care about the child crying under his arm. Officer Trent Mallerie had been on the force for eleven years, and he was absolute in his belief that his badge made him untouchable. But as he stood there mocking the sobbing girl, he had no idea he had just made the single biggest mistake of his entire life—because he never bothered to ask who her mother was.
