humiliating position from the lobby encounter,

but this time it was infinitely tighter and vastly

more agonizing.

Chapter 7: Peace

The physical pressure was completely

agonizing and inescapable. Cameron’s vision

rapidly blurred with hot tears of immense

pain and utter, soul-crushing helplessness. All

of his expensive training, his shiny gold

medals, his strict diets, and his massive ego

meant absolutely nothing against the cold,

crushing reality of a man who fought daily just

to survive. He slowly realized he wasn't

fighting an athlete; he was fighting a literal

ghost of war.

With a desperate, sobbing cry that echoed

loudly through the silent gym, Cameron

frantically tapped his hand against the mat.

Tap, tap, tap.

The referee lunged forward urgently to

stop the match, but Seth had already

completely released the devastating hold. The

rapid transition from applying lethal, bone-

breaking force to total, calm passivity was

instantaneous and deeply unsettling to watch.

Seth stood up slowly, calmly brushing a tiny

speck of dust off his faded black shirt. He

didn't raise his tired arms in victory. He didn't

even glance at the cheering crowd. The silence

in the gym was profound, heavy, and absolute.

It was the distinct silence of a shattered,

collective illusion.

Seth walked directly and purposely to the

edge of the mat where Marcus stood frozen.

The older man's face was completely ashen,

his knuckles white as he clutched a heavy

metal briefcase. Seth held out his scarred

hand. Marcus, trembling noticeably, slowly

handed over the heavy briefcase.

'You... who are you?' Marcus whispered

weakly, all the previous arrogance completely

bled from his shaking voice.

Seth didn't answer him. He didn't even

acknowledge the question. He simply took the

cold metal case, turned his back on the

wealthy men, and walked steadily out the back

doors into the cool, refreshing night air.

Two days later, at the brightly lit VA

hospital, Miller sat upright in his hospital bed,

staring in absolute, joyful shock at the printed

receipt in his trembling hands. 'Paid in full,'

the kind nurse smiled warmly at him. 'An

anonymous donor came in and covered the

entire cost of the surgery. You're going into the

OR tomorrow.' Miller looked quietly out the

hospital window, a single tear slipping silently

down his scarred cheek. He knew exactly who

it was.

Miles away, Seth sat quietly on a wooden

park bench, watching the gentle rain fall

continuously on the vast city. The dull, familiar

ache in his knee was undeniably still there, the

cold wind still bit sharply at his exposed skin,

and the horrific memories of the bloody valley

would unfortunately always haunt him in the

dark. But for the very first time in years, the

crushing heaviness in his scarred chest felt

just a little bit lighter. He closed his tired eyes,

listening peacefully to the rhythm of the rain,

and finally found a small, quiet fragment of

peace. The delivery guy was permanently

gone. The soldier finally rested.
