“I do not consent to you opening that.”
Mercer opened it anyway.
Loan projections.
Legal summaries.
Board briefing notes.
On top:
UNITY HERITAGE BANK
OFFICE OF THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Mercer glanced at it.
Closed the folder.
“These don’t prove who you are.”
Elena almost laughed from disbelief.
“They literally came from his office.”
Mercer turned.
“One more interruption and I’m removing you from this scene.”
“This is my branch.”
“And this is a police investigation.”
Collins stepped nearer.
“Sir, I can verify him through dispatch.”
“No.”
“It’ll take thirty seconds.”
“Stand down.”
Collins remained where he was.
Marcus looked at him.
Then back at Mercer.
“What lawful basis do you have to search me?”
Mercer did not answer.
Instead he grabbed Marcus’s right arm.
“Turn around.”
Elena stepped forward.
“No.”
Mercer looked at her.
“Stay back.”
Marcus did not resist.
“Officer, are you arresting me?”
“Detaining.”
“For what?”
“Obstruction.”
“How?”
“You keep refusing instructions.”
“I refused consent to a search.”
Mercer pulled his wrists behind him.
The folder slid from the counter.
Papers scattered across the marble.
A pen rolled across the floor and stopped beside Richard Voss’s polished shoe.
Voss looked down.
For the first time since the police arrived, he did not look pleased with himself.
The handcuffs closed.
Elena stared at Mercer.
“That man signs every paycheck in this building.”
“Then he can explain that downtown.”
Marcus slowly turned his head.
“Officer Mercer.”
“What?”
“You’ve been given several opportunities to correct this.”
“Save it.”
Marcus looked toward Collins.
The younger officer was staring at one of the papers on the floor.
He bent.
Picked it up.
“Sir.”
Mercer ignored him.
“Sir, look at this.”
“I already looked.”
“This has his signature.”
At the bottom of the page:
Marcus Bennett Reed
Founder and Chief Executive Officer
Mercer glanced.
“Documents can be fabricated.”
Jordan Price spoke from the information desk.
“He’s on the wall.”
Everybody turned.
A framed display filled the far side of the lobby.
OUR HISTORY
At the center was a photograph from eighteen years earlier.
Marcus Reed, younger and thinner, standing beside community leaders as the first Unity Heritage branch opened.
Ribbon-cutting scissors in one hand.
His name on the plaque beneath.
Marcus looked at Mercer.
Mercer looked at the portrait.
For one second, something entered his expression that had been absent since he arrived.
Doubt.
That was the moment.
The moment when almost everything could have changed.
Remove the cuffs.
Verify.
Apologize.
Document the initial confusion.
Continue the day.
Mercer stared at the photograph.
Then said, “That picture could be years old.”
Jordan whispered, “That is literally how photographs work.”
A customer covered her mouth.
Elena grabbed a bank tablet.
She opened the public website.
The front page carried Marcus’s current photograph beside the announcement for that afternoon’s $80 million lending initiative.
She held it up.
“This is the bank website.”
Mercer looked.
“This can be manipulated.”
Elena’s face changed.
Until then, she had believed she was dealing with an officer who had made a bad assumption.
Now she understood something different.
The problem was no longer lack of evidence.
It was refusal to accept evidence.
Collins stepped closer.
“Sir, we need to remove the cuffs.”
Mercer turned toward him.
“What did I tell you?”
“We verified him.”
“You did not complete verification.”
“The department database matched him.”
“Then verify through dispatch.”
“That’s what I’ve been trying to do.”
Mercer’s face reddened.
“Do you want insubordination added to your file?”
Collins stopped.
Marcus watched him.
Then said something quietly.
“Officer Collins.”
Mercer moved between them.
“Do not address my partner.”
Marcus looked past him.
“The moment you know something is wrong, silence becomes a decision.”
Collins’s face tightened.
Marcus did not say anything else.
He looked toward Elena.
“My phone is in my inside coat pocket.”
Mercer laughed.
“Planning to call your lawyer?”
“No.”
“Who?”
“Someone who already knows Officer Mercer.”
Elena reached toward his coat.
Mercer raised one hand.
“Nobody touches him.”
Marcus looked at him.
