EXECUTIVE CLEARANCE VERIFICATION

Claire stared.

Robert stepped backward.

A second line appeared.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED

Then:

DANIEL CROSS

Claire's face went pale.

Robert looked toward the seating area.

Daniel was still sitting there.

The system continued loading.

AUTHORIZED ACCESS LEVEL: OMEGA

TERMINAL OPERATIONS: CLEARED

SECURITY SYSTEMS: CLEARED

EXECUTIVE OVERRIDE: ACTIVE

Claire whispered:

"What does that mean?"

Robert did not answer.

The screen displayed one final message.

AUTHORIZED EXECUTIVE — DANIEL CROSS

Then the airport system automatically unlocked a series of restricted functions.

Gate control.

Passenger security.

Operations command.

Emergency systems.

Everything.

Claire slowly turned toward Daniel.

For the first time that morning, she looked frightened.

Robert walked toward him.

"Mr. Cross."

Daniel looked up.

"Yes?"

Robert swallowed.

"Could I speak with you?"

Daniel stood.

"About my ticket?"

Robert looked at the torn pieces in the trash.

"About something much bigger than your ticket."

Daniel glanced at Claire.

Then at the monitor.

"I think so."

Robert lowered his voice.

"Why didn't you tell us who you were?"

Daniel's expression remained calm.

"I wanted to know how you treat people when you don't know who they are."

Robert said nothing.

Daniel looked toward Counter 17.

"The ticket isn't the problem."

He paused.

"The way you treated me is."

Claire looked down.

Daniel continued.

"And that's why I'm here."

Robert stared.

"Here for what?"

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small black access card.

Then placed it on the counter.

"I've been reviewing the complaints from this terminal."

Robert's face changed.

"You're..."

Daniel looked directly at him.

"Director of Airport Operations."

Claire stopped breathing.

Daniel picked up the torn pieces of his ticket from the trash.

He placed them carefully on the counter.

Then he said something that made Robert's blood run cold.

"I'm not here to punish Claire Donovan."

Claire looked up.

"I'm here to find out who taught her that this was acceptable."

Nobody spoke.

Then the airport's secure system beeped again.

A new alert appeared on the monitor.

UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED.

Below it was another line.

SUBJECT: DANIEL CROSS.

Daniel looked at the screen.

For the first time that morning, the calm expression disappeared from his face.

Because the system had just reported something impossible.

Someone else was already logged into the airport network...

using his identity.

And the access had been granted from somewhere inside Terminal Four.

Daniel looked toward the restricted corridor.

Then toward Robert.

"Lock the terminal."

Robert stared.

"What?"

"Now."

"Why?"

Daniel's eyes remained fixed on the screen.

"Because whoever is using my credentials..."

He paused.

"...knows exactly where I am."

And somewhere deep beneath the airport, a hidden server came online.

A single message appeared on its screen.

WELCOME BACK, DANIEL.

Then another:

WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU.

 The Ghost in the Network

Robert Kline did not move.

For several seconds, he simply stared at the monitor.

The warning remained on the screen.

UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED

SUBJECT: DANIEL CROSS

ACCESS ORIGIN: TERMINAL FOUR

Daniel stood beside him.

"That can't be right," Robert whispered.

"Why?"

"Because your credentials are physically locked to your executive card."

Daniel looked at the black access card on the counter.

"Then someone cloned it."

Robert shook his head.

"That shouldn't be possible."

Daniel gave him a quiet look.

"Neither should someone accessing my account from inside a terminal while I'm standing here."

Claire stepped closer.

"What does this mean?"

Robert turned toward her.

"It means someone is using his identity."

Daniel corrected him.

"Not just my identity."

Robert looked confused.

Daniel pointed toward the screen.

"They've accessed an executive-level account."

The monitor refreshed.

A list appeared.

GATE CONTROL

PASSENGER DATABASE

SECURITY CLEARANCE

BAGGAGE OPERATIONS

EMERGENCY OVERRIDE

Every item was marked:

AUTHORIZED

Claire took a step backward.

"Can they control all of that?"

Robert did not answer.

Daniel did.

"Yes."

Claire looked at him.

"Then why isn't anything happening?"

"Because they're not controlling the systems yet."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"They're testing access."

Robert understood.

"Testing what?"

"Whether the credentials work."

A new message appeared.

ACCESS VALIDATION: 100%

Daniel's expression hardened.

"They've passed."

Robert immediately reached for the security phone.

"I'll contact cybersecurity."

Daniel stopped him.

"No."

Robert stared.

"Why?"

"If the person behind this is already inside the network, calling the normal security team may tell them exactly what we're doing."

Robert lowered the phone.

"What do you suggest?"

Daniel looked toward the terminal.

"We find the access point."

Claire spoke quietly.

"Before we do that..."

Daniel turned.

She looked at the torn pieces of his ticket.

"Are you really the Director of Airport Operations?"

Daniel nodded.

Claire's face reddened.

"Then I'm sorry."

Daniel did not respond immediately.

"I know."

"I didn't know."

"That's exactly why I'm not firing you."

Claire looked surprised.

Daniel continued.

"If I fire you because you treated me badly, someone else will simply do the same thing tomorrow."

He looked toward the passengers still waiting in line.

"The problem isn't one employee."

Robert nodded slowly.

"It's the culture."

"Exactly."

Daniel looked back at the screen.

"And someone has been exploiting it."

They moved into a restricted office adjacent to the check-in area.

Daniel closed the door.

Robert activated a secure terminal.

Claire remained outside.

Daniel noticed.

"She can come in."

Robert looked surprised.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because she witnessed what happened."

Claire entered cautiously.

Daniel pointed toward a chair.

"Sit."

She did.

Daniel remained standing.

"Claire, I want you to answer one question."

She nodded.

"How many passengers have you treated like that?"

She looked down.

"I don't know."

"Estimate."

"A few."

"Ten?"

"No."

"Twenty?"

She hesitated.

"Maybe."

Daniel studied her.

"Did anyone tell you to do it?"

"No."

"Did anyone reward you for it?"

"No."

"Then why?"

Claire took a long breath.

"Because that's how everyone works."

Daniel said nothing.

She continued.

"New employees are told not to waste time with difficult passengers."

"Define difficult."

"People who argue."

"People who ask questions?"

"Sometimes."

"People who don't look like they can afford the ticket?"

Claire lowered her eyes.

"Sometimes."

Daniel nodded.

"Thank you."

She looked confused.

"For what?"

"For telling the truth."

Robert was watching the security terminal.

He suddenly interrupted.

"I found something."

Daniel walked over.

A map of Terminal Four appeared.

A red dot was blinking near Gate 41.

"What's that?"

"Unauthorized access node."

"How far?"

"About two hundred yards from here."

Daniel stared at the map.

"Gate 41."

Robert nodded.

"Yes."

Daniel frowned.

"That's strange."

"Why?"

"Gate 41 isn't assigned today."

Robert checked.

"You're right."

"Then why is the system active there?"

Robert pulled up the gate schedule.

Nothing.

No flight.

No boarding.

No crew.

No maintenance assignment.

The gate should not have been connected to the live network.

Yet the unauthorized access was coming from there.

Daniel looked at Robert.

"Who's supposed to have access to Gate 41?"

"Maintenance."

"Anyone else?"

"Security."

"Operations?"

"Normally, yes."

"Who accessed it this morning?"

Robert searched.

The results appeared.

His face changed.

"What?"

Robert slowly turned the screen.

"Your account."

Daniel stared.

"What time?"

"8:03."

"I arrived at 7:50."

"Yes."

"I was in the public terminal."

Robert looked at him.

"Then your account was active before you even reached Counter 17."

Daniel said nothing.

Claire looked frightened.

"So whoever is doing this was already inside the system before you arrived."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

Robert asked:

"Did you know this was happening?"

Daniel looked at him.

"I suspected something."

Claire stared.

"You suspected someone was using your account?"

"Not exactly."

"What did you suspect?"
