They assessed the crop.

They accepted that some fields would never recover.

But others had survived.

So they worked.

Every usable acre mattered.

The tractor ran for twelve hours a day.

It pulled.

Hauled.

Loaded.

Moved.

The machine that had once been a collection of damaged parts was now the most dependable piece of equipment on the farm.

One evening, Ryan looked at it.

“You know what's funny?”

“What?”

“They laughed at you because of the truck.”

Ethan smiled.

“And now?”

Ryan looked toward the fields.

“Now I think the truck is the least interesting thing about you.”

Ethan laughed.

“Thanks.”

“I meant it as a compliment.”

“I know.”

The offer came in September.

Carl arrived at the farm carrying an envelope.

He placed it on Ethan's workbench.

“Open it.”

Ethan did.

Inside was a check.

$60,000.

Ethan stared at it.

“For the tractor.”

Ryan nearly dropped the wrench in his hand.

“Sixty thousand?”

Carl nodded.

Ethan pushed the check back.

“No.”

Carl smiled.

“You didn't even think about it.”

“I already did.”

“Before I came?”

“Yes.”

Carl sighed.

“Ethan, I know you said it wasn't for sale.”

“It isn't.”

“You could build another.”

“Not the same.”

“You could build two.”

Ethan shook his head.

Carl became serious.

“I owe you something.”

Ethan waited.

“An apology.”

Carl looked down.

“When you walked into my dealership, I saw an old pickup. Dirty boots. Grease on your hands.”

He paused.

“And I decided I knew how much money you had.”

Ethan said nothing.

“I was wrong.”

Ryan looked at Carl.

Carl continued.

“I've worked around farmers for twenty years.”

He looked at the tractor.

“And somehow I forgot that the people with the newest machines aren't always the ones with the strongest farms.”

Ethan smiled.

Carl picked up the check.

“If you ever change your mind…”

“I won't.”

Carl laughed.

“Then I guess I won't ask again.”

He turned to leave.

At the door, he stopped.

“You know what the funny thing is?”

“What?”

Carl smiled.

“I think that tractor is worth more to you than sixty thousand.”

Ethan nodded.

“It is.”

Carl left.

Ryan looked at Ethan.

“Would you really have said no if he offered eighty?”

Ethan smiled.

“Probably.”

“One hundred?”
