CLANG.

The bell echoed across the property.

The riders slowed.

Martha waved both arms.

"STOP!"

The first motorcycles skidded onto the gravel.

A tall man in a black leather vest climbed off his Harley.

He removed his helmet.

Gray showed at his temples.

He looked toward Martha.

Then toward the sky.

"Ma'am!" he shouted. "What's wrong?"

Martha pointed behind them.

"Tornado!"

The word barely left her mouth before the wind arrived.

Dust exploded across the road.

The riders ducked.

Martha screamed again.

"Basement! Get in the basement!"

The tall man stared at her for half a second.

Then something large flew across the road behind him.

His expression changed.

"Everybody off the bikes!" he shouted.

The group reacted instantly.

Seventy-nine riders.

Men and women.

Young and old.

They abandoned their motorcycles and ran toward Martha's house.

She opened the bulkhead doors.

"Single file!"

The tall man reached her first.

"How many can it hold?"

"Enough."

"Ma'am—"

"Don't call me ma'am. My name is Martha."

He nodded.

"Dean."

"Good. Dean. Get your people downstairs."

He turned.

"Everybody heard her! Move!"

The motorcycles disappeared beneath the growing cloud of dust as seventy-nine strangers rushed into Martha Caldwell's basement.

None of them knew that the storm was only the beginning.

And none of them knew that their lives were about to become connected to the old woman who had opened her door when she had every reason to keep it closed.

The basement filled within minutes.

Martha had always thought the room looked large.

Now it seemed impossibly small.

Seventy-nine people filled every corner.

Leather jackets brushed against concrete walls. Helmets were stacked beneath the shelves. Boots crowded the floor.

The basement smelled of wet leather, gasoline, dirt, and fear.

Martha moved through the crowd with a flashlight.

"Everybody sit."

No one argued.

That surprised her.

She had expected chaos.
