Black CEO Was Denied Room Service — Minutes Later, He Fired the Entire Staff on the Spot.
Chapter 3
“Why?”
“To document the culture.”
“And now?”
Damon looked at Victoria through the glass.
“Now I'm realizing there's a difference between expecting something intellectually and experiencing it emotionally.”
“That difference matters.”
“I know.”
“Don't confuse accountability with revenge.”
Damon closed his eyes.
“I won't.”
“Then what are you feeling?”
He looked again at the hotel.
“Determination.”
That answer felt more honest.
Inside the lobby, Ryan Chen was staring at his computer.
His face had changed.
He had finally opened the reservation system.
The reservation was there.
Not merely there.
It was marked VIP CORPORATE OWNER ASSESSMENT.
The guest name was unmistakable.
DAMON WASHINGTON.
CEO.
Washington Hospitality Group.
Ryan's heart began pounding.
He looked at the time.
The reservation had been confirmed three days earlier.
He whispered:
“Oh no.”
Then his phone buzzed.
A breaking-news notification appeared.
WASHINGTON HOSPITALITY GROUP ACQUIRES METROPOLITAN HOTEL HOLDINGS FOR $4.2 BILLION.
Ryan stared at the screen.
He opened the article.
A photograph appeared.
Damon Washington.
Suit.
Tie.
Confident smile.
The headline beneath it read:
Damon Washington Named CEO of Newly Acquired Metropolitan Hotel Holdings.
Ryan looked toward the entrance.
Victoria was still laughing with guests.
He whispered:
“Victoria…”
She turned.
“What?”
“We need to talk.”
“Not now.”
“It's important.”
“What could possibly be more important?”
Ryan turned his computer toward her.
Victoria glanced at the screen.
Then froze.
The Owner Comes Back
Damon re-entered the Grand View Imperial twenty-three minutes after leaving.
This time, nobody stopped him.
Not because Victoria had changed her mind.
Because she hadn't yet realized what was happening.
Several phones were buzzing throughout the lobby.
Guests whispered.
The young technology entrepreneur who had been recording earlier stared at his screen.
“That's him.”
His friend looked confused.
“Who?”
“The CEO.”
“What CEO?”
“Damon Washington.”
The friend looked toward the entrance.
Then his eyes widened.
“No way.”
Damon walked calmly toward the reception desk.
The same worn leather jacket.
The same black T-shirt.
The same jeans.
Nothing about him had changed.
Except the way people looked at him.
Ryan stood behind the desk.
His face was pale.
Damon stopped.
“Good evening again.”
Ryan swallowed.
“Mr. Washington.”
Damon nodded.
“I believe we have a reservation.”
“Yes, sir.”
“The penthouse?”
“Yes, sir.”
Ryan looked devastated.
“I tried to tell her.”
“I know.”
Victoria turned.
“What is going on?”
Jake Morrison approached with his phone.
“Victoria…”
“What?”
Jake looked at Damon.
Then at Victoria.
“He owns the hotel.”
Victoria stared at him.
“What?”
“The entire hotel chain.”
Silence.
Damon reached into his jacket.
He removed a business card.
He placed it gently on the counter.
Damon Washington
Chief Executive Officer
Washington Hospitality Group
Victoria picked it up.
Her hands began trembling.
“No.”
Damon said nothing.
“This isn't possible.”
“It is.”
“You were…”
She stopped.
Damon waited.
“You were dressed like…”
“Like what?”
Victoria couldn't answer.
Damon gave her the opportunity.
“What did I look like?”
She stared at him.
Her face was turning white.
“I didn't know.”
“That is precisely the problem.”
Several guests lowered their phones.
Others raised them higher.
The young entrepreneur was still recording.
Victoria tried to recover.
“Mr. Washington, I apologize for the misunderstanding.”
Damon shook his head.
“It wasn't a misunderstanding.”
“I was simply enforcing hotel policy.”
“Which policy?”
“Our standards.”
“Which standards?”
Victoria hesitated.
