Black CEO Was Denied Room Service — Minutes Later, He Fired the Entire Staff on the Spot
Chapter 3
"What is it?"
Jake didn't answer.
"Jake?"
He swallowed.
"We need to talk."
"Not now."
"Victoria."
She turned toward him.
"I said not now."
Jake held up his phone.
"Corporate just sent something."
Victoria glanced at the screen.
Then she froze.
The acquisition announcement filled it.
WASHINGTON HOSPITALITY GROUP COMPLETES $4.2 BILLION ACQUISITION OF METROPOLITAN HOTEL HOLDINGS.
Below the headline was a photograph.
Damon Washington.
The same man who had just been escorted out.
Victoria stared at the image.
Then at the entrance.
Damon was standing there.
Her face drained of color.
"What is he doing here?"
Jake whispered:
"He owns the hotel."
Silence.
Victoria shook her head.
"No."
"He owns the chain."
"No."
Jake's voice became quieter.
"Yes."
Damon walked toward the desk.
Every step seemed to echo.
Ryan Chen, the assistant manager, stood behind the reception computer.
His face was pale.
Damon stopped in front of him.
"Ryan."
"Yes, sir."
"My reservation."
Ryan swallowed.
"Yes."
He looked at the screen.
"Penthouse suite. Washington Hospitality Group."
Damon nodded.
"I thought so."
Ryan looked toward Victoria.
"I tried to tell her."
"I know."
Victoria finally found her voice.
"This is impossible."
Damon looked at her.
"Why?"
"You..."
She couldn't finish.
"You looked like..."
Damon waited.
Victoria's face reddened.
"I made a mistake."
"No," Damon said quietly.
"You made a decision."
She stared at him.
"Based on what?"
Victoria had no answer.
Damon placed a business card on the desk.
Damon Washington
Chief Executive Officer
Washington Hospitality Group
Victoria stared at it.
"This could be fake."
Damon almost smiled.
"Of course."
He pulled out his phone.
Sarah answered immediately.
"Mr. Washington."
"Sarah, please connect me to the board."
"Already standing by."
The conference call began.
Voices came through the speaker.
"Mr. Washington, we're sorry about what happened."
Damon looked at Victoria.
"I think everyone should hear this."
He put the phone on speaker.
The board members introduced themselves.
Victoria stood completely still.
Damon spoke calmly.
"Good evening."
No one responded for a moment.
"I'm calling from the lobby of the Grand View Imperial."
A board member said:
"We understand."
"I don't think you do."
Damon looked around.
"Twenty minutes ago, I was refused service."
The board fell silent.
"I was told I did not belong here."
Another silence.
"I was escorted outside."
Victoria looked down.
Damon continued.
"By your manager."
One board member asked:
"Victoria Sterling?"
"Yes."
The room became painfully quiet.
Damon looked directly at Victoria.
"Victoria, would you like to explain what happened?"
She swallowed.
"I believed..."
"What did you believe?"
"I believed you were attempting to gain access without authorization."
"The reservation was legitimate."
"I know that now."
Damon nodded.
"Yes."
He turned toward Ryan.
"How many complaints have been filed against Victoria?"
Ryan hesitated.
Damon already knew the answer.
"Seventeen," Ryan whispered.
Victoria's head snapped toward him.
"What?"
Ryan looked down.
"Seventeen complaints."
The conference call went silent again.
Jennifer's voice came through.
"Correction. Seventeen documented complaints over eighteen months."
Damon looked at Victoria.
"Six settlements."
Victoria's eyes widened.
"Those were confidential."
Jennifer answered.
"They were confidential under the previous ownership."
Damon said:
"Not anymore."
Victoria stepped forward.
"You can't do this."
"Do what?"
"Destroy my career over one incident."
Damon shook his head.
"This isn't one incident."
He turned toward the guests.
"That's the difference."
He spoke slowly.
"You believed tonight was about one person."
He pointed toward himself.
"It isn't."
Then he pointed toward Victoria.
"It's about a pattern."
The young Black woman who had been watching from the corner stepped forward.
Her voice trembled.
"May I say something?"
Damon nodded.
She looked at Victoria.
"This happens."
Victoria looked away.
The woman continued.
"Not always this publicly. Sometimes it's being ignored at the desk. Sometimes it's being told a room isn't ready when someone else gets the same room. Sometimes it's being watched while you walk through a store."
Her husband stood beside her.
"We've experienced it too."
Damon nodded.
"I believe you."
Jake stepped forward.
