She reached out, placing her hand over his. The calluses on their palms met. Elias looked into her eyes and saw the same fierce, desperate warmth he had felt on that freezing winter night. The walls they had built around their hearts finally crumbled. He leaned in, and when their lips met, it was a promise sealed in the quiet solitude of the frontier.

Summer arrived, bringing long, golden days to the ranch. Elias and Nita were happy, living in a world of their own making. But the Wild West was never tamed for long.

One evening, Barnaby began to bark frantically at the tree line. Elias grabbed his rifle, but Nita placed a hand on his arm, her face pale. She recognized the calls of the quail coming from the shadows—it was an Apache signaling method. Five warriors rode out from the pines. At their head was a tall, fierce-looking man with a scar across his jaw. Nita gasped. It was Chato, her older brother.

They had been tracking her for months, assuming she had been taken captive. The warriors dismounted, their expressions hostile as they saw Nita standing unchained next to a white rancher. Chato spoke rapidly in Apache, his voice laced with anger and accusation. He demanded she gather her things and return to the reservation with them immediately.

Nita stepped forward, standing between Elias and the warriors. She spoke in her native tongue, her voice strong and unwavering. She explained the blizzard, the cabin, and how Elias had saved her life. She told her brother that she was not a captive, but a woman who had chosen her own path.

Chato listened, his eyes shifting from Nita to Elias. Finally, he spoke in broken English. "You save her life. This is good. But she is Apache. She belongs with her blood." "She belongs wherever she chooses to be," Elias replied, holding his ground.
