CEO Laughed Black Janitor "Teach Me to Invest!" — His Smile Vanishes When the Man Starts Talking
Chapter 5
Derek stepped between them. "Catherine, this is insane. You're consulting the janitor." "I'm consulting someone who spotted in ten seconds what your team of MBAs missed in six months." She pressed the card into Raymond's palm. "Goldman Sachs. Catherine Morrison, Managing Director. 9:00 AM. My office. Can you make it?"
Raymond looked at the embossed lettering, then up at Catherine. He nodded slowly.
Derek's face twisted in rage. "Meeting over! Everyone out. Now!"
The following Monday, Raymond walked into the towering glass lobby of Goldman Sachs. He wasn't wearing his blue uniform. He wore a simple, well-pressed grey suit he had bought for Alicia's high school graduation.
In Catherine's top-floor office, he didn't just tell her about Technova. He opened his scratched, $50 pawn-shop laptop and showed her his own portfolio. He walked her through his $340,000 balance, his 22% annual yields, and the pristine, meticulously researched spreadsheet models he had built over a decade of midnight diner coffees.
Catherine didn't laugh. She didn't mock him. She offered him a job as a junior risk analyst, at a starting salary triple what he made pushing a mop.
Three weeks later, the SEC halted trading on Technova pending an investigation into massive accounting fraud. The stock went to zero. Venture Tech Capital, having wired their final $120 million, was immediately insolvent. The Silverstone Tower offices were locked up by creditors, the Wharton MBAs were suddenly unemployed, and Derek Ashford's career was permanently destroyed.
A year later, Raymond sat at a mahogany desk of his own at Goldman Sachs, reviewing a new S-1 filing. A framed photo of Alicia—now an MIT graduate with honors—sat next to his monitor. He caught a discrepancy in the footnotes, highlighted the negative cash flow, and smiled.
He didn't need to leave anonymous notes anymore. Now, when Raymond Cole spoke, Wall Street listened.
