At 8:16, Danielle walked into the kitchen holding her phone.

"Terrence."

He looked up.

"You need to see this."

A video was playing.

It had been recorded by someone passing the traffic stop.

The footage showed Terrence standing beside the road while officers searched his truck.

Then it showed the cake falling.

The caption read:

OFFICER DESTROYS MAN'S MOM'S BIRTHDAY CAKE DURING ROADSIDE SEARCH.

The video had already been shared thousands of times.

Danielle looked at him.

"This is everywhere."

Terrence sighed.

His mother entered the kitchen.

"What's everywhere?"

Neither sibling answered.

Evelyn took Danielle's phone.

She watched the video.

Terrence expected anger.

Instead, his mother looked sad.

Not because of the cake.

Because of something else.

She handed the phone back.

"Did he know who you were?"

"No."

"And when he found out?"

"Everything changed."

Evelyn nodded slowly.

"That's the problem."

Terrence looked at her.

She continued.

"You shouldn't have to carry a badge to be treated with dignity."

CHAPTER 10 — THE SECOND INVESTIGATION

By Monday morning, the roadside stop had become much larger than Terrence expected.

The county police department announced an internal review.

Officer Haskell was temporarily reassigned pending investigation.

But Terrence's federal supervisor was interested in something else.

Special Agent in Charge Rebecca Sloan placed a folder on the conference table.

"We recovered the dispatch records."

Terrence opened it.

The original BOLO had indeed described a different vehicle.

"There's more," Sloan said.

She slid another document toward him.

"Haskell has conducted fourteen vehicle searches in the last six months under similar circumstances."

Terrence looked up.

"Outcomes?"

"Eleven resulted in nothing."

"And the other three?"

"Property was seized."

"Charges?"

"One."

Terrence leaned back.

That changed things.

Sloan continued.

"We were already reviewing two complaints connected to him. Your stop gives us something we didn't have before."

"Video?"

"Video, dispatch records, witnesses, and a clean subject whose entire timeline can be independently verified."

Terrence frowned.

"I'm not comfortable being part of an investigation I'm assigned to."

"You're not."

Sloan closed the folder.

"Effective immediately, you're recused from anything involving Haskell."

Terrence nodded.

That was the correct decision.

But emotionally, it was harder than he expected.

For months, Haskell had been a name in files.

Now Terrence could remember his face.

The dismissive smile.

The way he threw Evelyn's birthday decorations onto the pavement.

The refusal to stop searching when nothing supported his assumptions.

Sloan studied him.
