CHAPTER 1 — THE MOMENT THE ROOM WENT SILENT

Nobody in Courtroom 6 expected Officer Dean Keller to lose control.

The morning had begun like dozens of preliminary hearings before it. Lawyers whispered over yellow legal pads. Families waited on wooden benches. A clerk organized files beneath the fluorescent lights while Judge Miriam Lawson worked through a crowded docket.

Then Keller stepped toward thirty-six-year-old Simone Brooks.

And struck her.

The sound stopped the room.

Simone's face turned with the impact.

For one second, she didn't move.

Her hands were secured in front of her. She wore county-issued clothing and had spent the previous night in a holding cell, but nothing about her posture suggested panic.

Keller pointed at her.

"You think you can stand here and call me a liar?"

Simone slowly faced him.

"I said your report isn't what happened."

Keller had come to court as the principal witness against her.

According to his report, Simone had become aggressive during a roadside detention the previous evening, resisted his instructions, and tried to strike him.

According to Simone, none of that was true.

Her attorney, Jordan Ellis, stood immediately.

"Your Honor—"

Judge Lawson raised her hand.

"Officer Keller, step away from the defendant."

Keller didn't.

Instead, he leaned closer.

"You should've learned last night when to stop talking."

Simone's expression changed.

Not much.

But Jordan noticed.

So did Bailiff Thomas Reed.

Simone shifted her weight slightly.

Keller raised his arm again.

"Officer," Reed warned.

Keller moved before Reed could reach him.

Simone reacted.

She didn't punch him.

Her cuffed hands came up defensively as she stepped sideways. Keller's arm passed across her shoulder instead of connecting with her face. His momentum carried him forward.

Simone pivoted.

Keller lost his footing against the leg of a chair and fell heavily beside the counsel table.

Everything happened almost instantly.

The gallery erupted.

"Stay where you are!" Reed shouted.

Simone froze.

Her hands remained visible.

"I'm staying."

Another bailiff reached Keller.
