The answer appeared moments later, resolving through the heat haze and dust.

Military vehicles.

Several of them. Heavy, armored, painted in matte desert tan and olive drab.

First came two heavily armored tactical JLTVs (Joint Light Tactical Vehicles), their massive tires chewing up the asphalt, their heavy suspension absorbing the minor bumps of the highway without a shudder.

Then came more. Two standard up-armored Humvees, antennas whipping violently in the wind.

Then even more. Behind the Humvees, a massive, heavily armored troop transport vehicle roared over the crest, followed by two sleek, black government SUVs with dark tinted windows and hidden strobe lights flashing aggressively in their grilles.

The rumble intensified into a deafening roar as the convoy rapidly closed the distance. The ground beneath the officers' feet physically vibrated.

Drivers who had been passing the traffic stop began pulling over in a panic, throwing their vehicles onto the grassy shoulders, desperate to get out of the way of the unstoppable wall of armor barreling down the highway. People stepped outside their vehicles, shielding their eyes from the dust, staring in absolute shock.

The convoy wasn't slowing down. It was maintaining a speed well over eighty miles per hour. And it was heading directly, undeniably, toward the exact spot where the police cruiser and the lone green motorcycle were parked.

Jenkins's supreme confidence, the arrogant certainty she had displayed just minutes earlier, began evaporating like water on a hot skillet. She took a step backward, instinctively reaching for the door handle of her cruiser. "Mark... what is this? Is there a base nearby? Are they running a drill?"

Davies didn't answer. He couldn't. He slowly reached up and removed his mirrored sunglasses, letting them dangle from his fingers. For the first time since the traffic stop began, genuine, profound confusion and awe appeared on his face.

"They aren't running a drill, Sarah," Davies whispered, his voice barely audible over the roaring engines. "They're stopping."

The lead JLTVs hit their massive air brakes. The screech of heavy pads against steel rotors pierced the air. The convoy began a rapid, highly coordinated deceleration. The vehicles did not just pull over; they executed a flawless tactical halt, angling their heavy chassis to create a defensive perimeter around the police cruiser and the motorcycle.

The Humvees slid to a stop, tires smoking slightly. The troop transport blocked both lanes of the highway entirely, shutting down civilian traffic in both directions. The black SUVs swerved onto the gravel shoulder, stopping just inches from the rear bumper of Jenkins's police cruiser.

Dust settled across the roadside like a thick, choking fog.

And then, absolute silence followed. The massive diesel engines were cut simultaneously. The sudden absence of sound was almost more deafening than the roar of their approach.

The heavy armored doors of the vehicles opened.

Chapter 5: The Gathering of Eagles

Dozens of soldiers stepped out onto the Kansas highway. They did not scramble. They were not hurried. There was no shouting, no chaotic scrambling for position. They moved with a chilling, synchronized precision. They were fully geared, wearing dress uniforms—Army Greens, crisp, perfectly pressed, a striking contrast to the heavy armor they had just climbed out of.

They were organized. Disciplined. Professional. They formed two lines flanking the vehicles, standing at rigid attention, their eyes fixed straight ahead.
