Corrupt Cop Destroyed an Old Biker’s Bar — Then He Made a Call He Hadn’t Made in 15 Years
Chapter 1
The morning everything changed started like every other morning at the Last Ride Tavern—up before the sun.
William Stone Walker had been waking at 5:00 a.m. since 1978. It was a lingering habit left over from years when sleeping past dawn could get a man killed. Now, it just meant he got the coffee started before anyone else arrived, swept the floor in the quiet gray light, and had a few precious minutes to himself before the day opened up.
He was sixty-eight years old. His hands were big and scarred, the knuckles permanently thickened from decades that had not been gentle. His hair had gone white sometime in his fifties, though he had stopped noticing long before then. His face carried the kind of deep, weathered lines that come not from age alone, but from everything a man puts himself through before he finally learns to stop.
The Last Ride Tavern sat on a two-lane highway at the edge of Mil Haven, Montana, a town of about 4,000 people spread thin across a valley the mountains had apparently forgotten about. It was a simple place: three churches, one grocery store, a gas station, a mechanic shop called Dutch's, and a diner called Rosie's. Stone had bought the bar eleven years ago with cash he had spent most of his adult life earning through means he no longer discussed.
He had walked into the empty building back then, looked at the cracked walls, the sticky floors, and the broken jukebox in the corner, and made a decision. He was done running from what he used to be. He was going to build something decent.
The Last Ride was not a fancy place, and it was never going to be. It held twelve bar stools, a scattering of tables, a pool table that leaned slightly to the left, and a jukebox Stone had personally repaired. He kept it stocked with country, classic rock, and a few Motown records. His late wife, Eleanor, had loved Motown, and Stone was not prepared to live anywhere her music couldn't play.
Behind the counter, mounted on the wall in a glass display case, was his old Hells Angels vest.
The patch was faded. The leather was cracked in two places along the left shoulder. It had been through things that Stone did not talk about in polite company. He kept it there because it was honest. It was a daily reminder that a man's life did not begin the day he decided to be respectable; it began the day he decided to be honest about every chapter he had lived.
For the most part, the people of Mil Haven left him alone about it. The ones who knew his history had long since decided he was not a threat. The ones who didn't simply saw a quiet old man who poured a fair, unwatered drink. Stone had a rule that everyone understood within five minutes of sitting at his bar: You leave your garbage at the door. If you were carrying a bad day, a bad attitude, or judgment for the person sitting next to you, you left it outside. Everybody got the same cup of coffee and the same respect, right up until they proved they didn't deserve it.
For eleven years, the peace held. Right up until the morning Deputy Cole Harrington walked through the door.
Harrington was new to Mil Haven, a man who wore his badge like a loaded weapon and treated his uniform like a crown. He pushed through the heavy wooden doors of the Last Ride accompanied by two junior officers, the morning light spilling in behind them, cutting through the dusty air of the tavern.
Stone didn't look up immediately. He continued methodically wiping down a porcelain coffee mug with a white cloth.
"That patch on your vest means something," Officer Harrington's voice cut through the quiet bar like a blade, his eyes fixed on the glass case behind the register. "It means you're already guilty."
