The Honorable Judge Sylvia Vance sat high on her mahogany bench, adjusting her reading glasses

as she reviewed the docket for the afternoon. The courtroom of the 14th District Court was a

sanctuary of order in a city often overwhelmed by chaos. Wood-paneled walls, worn smooth by

decades of legal proceedings, seemed to hold the echoes of countless pleas, verdicts, and judgments.

For Sylvia, a Black woman who had fought tooth and nail through a prejudiced system to earn her

robe, this room was sacred ground.

It was a Tuesday afternoon, gray and unrelenting outside the tall, frosted windows. Inside, the air

separating the gallery from the well of the court and marched directly toward the bench. His face

was a mask of cold arrogance, a look Sylvia had seen too many times on officers accustomed to

operating above the law.

"Judge Sylvia Vance," Miller announced, his voice loud enough to ensure everyone in the room

heard. "You are under arrest."

A stunned silence fell over the courtroom. The bailiff, an older man named Jenkins, stepped

forward, his hand instinctively moving toward his utility belt. "Hold on a minute, Detective. You
