Noah slowly turned.
Victor stood behind him.
His face was unreadable.
Evelyn stared at him.
"Victor."
He shook his head.
"I didn't write that."
A sound echoed from the tunnel.
Footsteps.
Someone was coming.
Mason appeared.
But he wasn't alone.
Two armed men followed him.
Victor reached for his weapon.
Mason raised his hand.
"Don't."
Noah stepped forward.
"Where is my father?"
Mason looked at the photograph.
"Closer than you think."
"Stop talking in riddles."
Mason sighed.
"Daniel discovered where the missing money really came from."
Victor stared.
"What?"
"It wasn't club money."
"Then whose was it?"
Mason looked at Noah.
"Your mother's."
Noah froze.
"My mother?"
"Your father discovered that your mother had been receiving payments."
"From whom?"
"From a company called Meridian."
Victor's face changed.
He knew the name.
"What is Meridian?"
Mason replied:
"A shell company."
"Doing what?"
"Moving money."
Noah looked at the documents on the table.
"So my father tried to expose them."
Mason nodded.
"And somebody tried to stop him."
"Who?"
Mason looked at Victor.
Victor raised his weapon.
"Don't."
Mason smiled sadly.
"You still think it was me."
Noah looked between them.
"What happened eighteen years ago?"
Mason spoke quietly.
"Victor followed Daniel."
"I know."
"He saw me give your father the box."
"What was inside?"
"A hard drive."
"With what?"
"Proof."
"Proof of what?"
"That Meridian had bribed law enforcement officials, politicians, and business owners for years."
Noah stared.
"And the money?"
"Payments."
Victor's jaw tightened.
"And Daniel stole it?"
"No."
"Then who?"
Mason looked toward the tunnel.
"The person standing next to you."
Noah turned.
Evelyn.
She went pale.
"What?"
Mason looked at her.
"You were the courier."
Evelyn stepped backward.
Victor stared at his sister.
"No."
Evelyn began shaking her head.
"I didn't know."
Mason answered:
"You knew enough."
Noah couldn't believe what he was hearing.
"My aunt worked for them?"
"Not willingly."
Mason lowered his weapon.
"She was blackmailed."
Victor turned toward Evelyn.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
She began crying.
"Because they had your daughter."
Victor froze.
Noah stared.
"My cousin?"
Evelyn nodded.
"She was six."
"They threatened her."
"Yes."
Mason continued.
"Daniel discovered the truth."
"He tried to help her."
Victor lowered his weapon.
"And that's why Daniel disappeared."
"No."
Mason looked at Noah.
"That's not the whole story."
The tunnel lights turned on.
Someone stood at the far end.
An older man.
Gray hair.
Lean face.
A familiar scar above his eyebrow.
Noah stopped breathing.
The man whispered:
"Noah."
The world seemed to stop.
His father was alive.
Noah couldn't move.
Daniel Mercer looked older than the man in his mother's photographs.
But the eyes were the same.
That was enough.
Noah stepped forward.
"Don't."
Daniel's voice trembled.
Noah stopped.
"Is it really you?"
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
Noah laughed once.
It was the sound of someone whose mind couldn't decide whether to celebrate or break.
"You let me believe you were dead."
Daniel looked down.
"I know."
"For eighteen years."
"I know."
"My mother cried every birthday."
"I know."
"She told me you were gone."

Noah stepped closer.
"Then why?"
Daniel's eyes filled.
"Because I thought somebody would kill you."
"Who?"
"Meridian."
Noah looked at Mason.
Then Victor.
Then Evelyn.
"Why didn't you go to the police?"
Daniel smiled sadly.
"Because some of them worked for Meridian."
"So you ran."
"I disappeared."
"You hid."
"Yes."
"While I grew up without you."
Daniel lowered his head.
"I made the worst choice of my life."
Noah stared at him.
"Then tell me everything."
Daniel nodded.
He explained what had happened.
Eighteen years earlier, he had discovered that a regional construction company was secretly moving money through shell businesses.
Evelyn had been coerced into delivering packages.
Mason had been investigating from inside the system.
Victor knew there was corruption but did not know how deep it went.
Daniel found evidence that could expose everyone.
He planned to take it to federal investigators.
Meridian learned about the plan.
They threatened Evelyn's daughter.
Daniel tried to protect her.
Then the attack came.
"At Black Ridge," Daniel said, "someone shot at me."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"Was it Meridian?"
"Probably."
"What happened?"
"I escaped."
"Where were you?"
"For years, moving from place to place."
Noah's voice became bitter.
"Did you ever think of coming home?"
"Every day."
"Then why didn't you?"
