The room applauded.

Karen didn't move.

Martin announced that the board would review the security contract and consider disciplinary action.

Julie spoke first.

She held up Emma's bucket.

“My daughter thought she was being punished for trick-or-treating.”

Her voice cracked.

“You can call it safety if you want, but my child learned that adults in uniforms can take things from her if a woman with a clipboard says so.”

The room murmured.

Luis played the video.

Priya presented the bylaws.

She explained that Karen had exceeded her discretionary spending authority.

Then Martin projected the security contract.

Everyone stared.

A gasp went through the room.

The contract included curfew enforcement, pedestrian redirection, and something that made everyone's stomach turn.

Confiscation support.

Karen had signed it alone.

Martin hadn't approved it.

The treasurer hadn't approved it.

The board hadn't voted.

Then Karen's lawyer stood.

The Counterattack

The lawyer was a thin man in a gray suit.

His voice was smooth.

“My client acted in good faith under the reasonable belief that safety funds were available for time-sensitive holiday risk mitigation.”

People booed.

He waited.

“She had received communication from the association's insurance carrier regarding increased liability exposure related to after-dark pedestrian activity, unsupervised minors, and holiday gatherings.”

He handed documents to the board.

Martin read one.

His expression changed.

The lawyer continued.

“Further, after residents organized what they publicly called Operation Midnight Sugar, encouraged children to violate the approved curfew, removed secured items from an evidence container, and restarted neighborhood activity after midnight, the association's liability exposure became substantially worse.”

The room shifted.

I felt it.

Everyone did.
