Marcus, seeing the CEO approach, immediately puffed out his chest, believing this was his moment of validation. He thought they had come out to commend his swift action in protecting the perimeter.

“Mr. Sterling, Ms. Vance,” Marcus said loudly, stepping sharply away from Arthur to address his superiors. “Everything is under control. We intercepted a trespasser trying to infiltrate the gala. We were just about to escort him off the premises.”

Richard Sterling did not look at Marcus. He didn't even acknowledge the young guard’s existence. His eyes were locked entirely on the old man in the frayed charcoal coat. As Richard approached, all the blood drained from his face, leaving him looking as pale as a ghost.

Eleanor dropped her clipboard. It clattered loudly against the marble pavement, sending a few loose papers scattering in the wind. She didn't bother to pick it up.

“My god,” Eleanor breathed, raising a trembling hand to her mouth.

Marcus, oblivious to the terror radiating from his bosses, smiled. “Like I told him, people like him don’t belong in—”

“Shut your mouth!” Richard Sterling roared, whipping his head around to glare at Marcus with a ferocity that made the young guard physically recoil. The CEO’s voice echoed off the buildings, startling the remaining guests.

Marcus blinked, stunned, the blood rushing to his cheeks. “Sir, I… I was just doing my job. He’s dressed like a beggar—”

“You absolute, monumental fool,” Richard hissed, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and panic. He turned away from the guards and quickly closed the distance between himself and Arthur Pendelton.

To the absolute shock of Marcus, Reynolds, the other guard, and every single wealthy patron watching from the sidelines, Richard Sterling—one of the most powerful men in the city, the master of the Obsidian Tower—bowed his head deeply in front of the old man in the ragged coat.

Chapter 9: The Revelation

“Mr. Pendelton,” Richard Sterling said, his voice laced with profound apology and breathless anxiety. “Arthur. I… I don’t know what to say. I am so unbelievably sorry. Words cannot express the depth of my humiliation.”

A collective gasp rippled through the assembled crowd. The name Pendelton was legendary in these circles. It was the name on the city's largest hospital, the grandest library, the most prestigious university wings. It was the name of the man who funded the very gala they were attending.

Marcus felt as if the ground beneath him had suddenly vanished. The breath was knocked out of his lungs. The world began to spin. Pendelton? The billionaire? The founder of the Sterling Foundation? This frail old man in the frayed coat?

Arthur leaned heavily on his walking stick, a small, sad smile playing on his lips. He looked at Richard Sterling with a forgiving, almost fatherly expression.

“It is quite alright, Richard,” Arthur said, his voice calm and steady, entirely devoid of the anger one might expect. “There is no need for apologies on your part. You were inside, managing the event.”

“But this…” Richard gestured wildly to the guards. “This is inexcusable. To be treated this way at your own building, at your own foundation’s event. I will have the entire security firm fired by morning. I will personally ensure this man never works in this city again.” Richard turned a lethal glare toward Marcus, who was now trembling violently, his perfectly pressed uniform suddenly feeling like a straightjacket.

“No, Richard, you will do no such thing,” Arthur said, his voice rising just enough to command absolute silence. He stepped forward, moving past the CEO, and walked slowly toward Marcus.

The two other guards, Reynolds and his partner, immediately backed away, their eyes wide with fear and respect. Marcus stood frozen, trapped in a nightmare of his own making. He looked at the old man he had just physically assaulted, the man he had called trash, the man he had said didn’t belong.
