On Wednesday evening, after the last regular class had thinned to the sound of mats being wiped and bags being zipped, Ilya Sorin asked Rowan to stay, in the manner he had used for years, which was to say he did not ask at all. He simply remained on the mat after everyone else had left, sitting with his legs folded and his old brown belt, gone pale at the edges with washing and years, resting across his knees, and Rowan, who at thirty three knew that arrangement of a seventy year old man and a belt as well as she knew her own handwriting, took off her shoes again and sat down across from him.

Walt Finch watched them from the office doorway for a moment. Walt, at sixty one, had coached half of Greyhaven at one time or another and had built Saltline on the unglamorous belief that a gym was a place where people learned not to panic. He raised one hand, half salute, half surrender, and left them to it, switching off the hall lights as he went so that only the mat lights burned, in a long pool, like a stage after the audience has gone home.

"You have been very busy being interviewed," Ilya said.

"I have been very busy being asked the same question," Rowan said. "It has one careful answer and they keep hoping for a louder one."

"And on Saturday, there will be a louder room." He smoothed the belt once with the flat of his hand. "So. Tonight we do not train your hands. Your hands know their work. Tonight we talk about the trap, because all week people have been asking you about speed, and speed is not the subject. The trap is the subject. Say what a trap is."

Rowan folded her own legs under her, feeling the familiar pull in her hips, the mat cool through her trousers. "A position the other person enters because every step before it felt like their idea."

"Good. And when is a trap built?"

"Early."

"How early?"

She thought of Harold, of blue tape and a chair, of a whole year of small placements. "Before the person knows there is anything to avoid. Weeks early, sometimes. A grip you allow. A side you keep offering because it is genuinely weaker in one way and stronger in the way that matters. A rhythm you teach them to trust."

"A rhythm you teach them to trust," Ilya repeated, with the deep satisfaction of a man hearing his own sentence come home improved. "Yes. Listen to me now, because this is the last lesson before Saturday and I am too old to waste last lessons on decorating. A trap is not a trick. A trick is fast. A trick says, look here, while the other hand steals. A trap is slow and it is honest. It says, here is the floor, walk where you like, and every place you like to walk has been swept and measured by someone patient. Kieran walks fast because he trusts his first step. So your work is not to be faster than his first step. Your work is to have decided, weeks ago, quietly, what his second and third steps will cost him. That is all. That is the whole of it, and it has taken you six years to learn what I just said in one breath, because the breath is easy and the six years are the lesson."

They sat a while in the mat light. Somewhere in the building a pipe ticked as it cooled.

"You are not afraid I will lose?" Rowan asked at last, because she had never asked it directly, and it was Wednesday, and the room was empty.

Ilya looked at her with the expression he reserved for questions that answered themselves in the asking. "You may lose. It is a contest. Grown people agree to a contest and one of them loses, and the roof does not fall. What I am not afraid of is that you will lose yourself in there. Other grapplers, when the room gets loud, they abandon the thing they know and go chasing the room's idea of them. Kieran is chasing the room's idea of him this week. I have seen the interview. A man repeating a sentence he no longer believes is a man holding a position he no longer believes, and we both know what happens to positions like that. They are comfortable right up until they are not."

"Slow is not late," Rowan said quietly. "Slow is on time."
