“Break cleanly. Keep it controlled.”
Tyler backed away.
Marcus looked at him for a fraction of a second.
“You're learning,” he said under his breath.
Tyler was too exhausted to answer.
They resumed fighting.
With less than a minute left in the round, Marcus landed a clean jab followed by a right hand that struck Tyler's guard. Tyler responded with a short combination, forcing Marcus to retreat two steps.
Tyler felt the excitement surge through him.
Marcus was moving backward, and Tyler could have pursued him. He could have thrown a long combination, hoping to overwhelm him before he regained his footing.
Instead, Tyler stopped at the edge of his range.
Marcus recovered his balance.
He was not controlling the fight.
He was not dominating Marcus.
Raymond examined him while the corner team worked quickly.
“You're holding up,” the coach said. “Your breathing is getting heavy, so keep your movements economical. You don't need to win the fight in one exchange.”
Tyler drank water.
“Do you think I'm behind?”
Raymond looked toward the officials, then back at him.
“I think this is a close fight. I can't promise you what the judges are seeing. You have to fight the round in front of you.”
Tyler nodded.
The fourth round began with both fighters more cautious.
Marcus had recognized that Tyler was not going to give him the reckless exchanges he had anticipated. Tyler had learned that Marcus's patience could be as dangerous as his punches.
They exchanged jabs near the center of the ring.
Marcus stepped in with a combination. Tyler blocked the first punch, slipped the second, and answered with a controlled shot to the body.
Marcus countered immediately.
A right hand struck Tyler's guard, followed by a left hook that grazed his headgear. Tyler stepped away, but Marcus followed him toward the ropes.
Tyler's breathing grew ragged. His legs felt heavier, and his ribs hurt each time he inhaled deeply.
For several seconds, Marcus controlled the exchange, landing punches against Tyler's guard and forcing him to defend.
Tyler heard a voice shouting for him to hit back.
Another voice called him a coward.
The word struck an old nerve.
Tyler remembered every moment he had tried to prove he was not weak. He remembered the way he had mocked Martin, believing that making someone else look small would make him look powerful.
Marcus stepped in again.
Tyler saw a clear opening.
He could throw a powerful right hand and perhaps change the fight. He could make the crowd cheer. He could answer the voices in the arena with a punch that would remind everyone he was still dangerous.
Then he heard Martin's voice in his memory.
Tyler kept his guard up.
He waited for Marcus's combination to finish, then slipped to the side and escaped the ropes.
But it changed the way Tyler understood the moment.
Marcus turned to face him.
The fight continued.
Tyler landed a clean jab, then a short right hand to the body. Marcus answered with a combination that forced Tyler to retreat. Neither fighter could establish complete control.
Tyler's arms felt heavy. His mouth was dry, and sweat ran into his eyes. Marcus was tired too, but he continued moving with disciplined precision.
With twenty seconds remaining, Marcus landed a clean shot to Tyler's headgear.
Tyler staggered half a step.
Marcus advanced, sensing an opportunity to finish the round strongly.
Tyler raised his guard and moved backward.
His legs wanted to stay planted. His lungs burned. Every instinct demanded that he answer the last punch with something powerful enough to silence the arena.
Marcus's next punch passed in front of him.
Tyler stepped away from the ropes and returned a short jab that touched Marcus's guard. He did not chase the exchange. He kept his balance and stayed defensively responsible until the final bell rang.
Both fighters stepped back.
For a moment, Tyler stood still, trying to catch his breath.
Marcus approached and extended his glove.
Tyler touched it.
“That was a good fight,” Marcus said.
Tyler nodded, still breathing hard.
“You're a tough opponent.”
“So are you.”
Raymond leaned close to Tyler.
“Whatever happens, listen to the announcement. Don't react before you understand it.”
Tyler almost laughed.
“I wasn't planning to throw a chair.”
“I'm serious.”
“So am I.”
Raymond gave his shoulder a brief squeeze.
In the audience, Martin stood with his hands folded in front of him.
He had watched Tyler make mistakes, recover from bad positions, and absorb punishment without surrendering his discipline. He had seen him choose not to throw a punch that might have satisfied his pride but exposed him to a dangerous counter.
Martin knew the result mattered to Tyler.
He also knew that the young man standing in the ring was no longer fighting only for the approval of strangers.
“Ladies and gentlemen, after four rounds of competition, we go to the judges' scorecards.”
Tyler looked across the ring at Marcus.
“The judges have reached a decision…”
