Without a second of hesitation, Eleanor lunged forward. She grabbed the edge of the porcelain plate and, with a vicious, deliberate thrust, shoved it forcefully back toward Margaret. The plate flipped. The steaming hot food, sticky sauce, broccoli, and carrots splashed directly onto Margaret’s chest. The empty plate clattered loudly to the marble floor, shattering into pieces.

Margaret gasped in sheer horror. The rich, greasy sauce instantly stained her humble beige cardigan, dripping down her front in a humiliating display. She stood frozen in shock, her hands hovering helplessly over the mess, her eyes filling with tears of profound shame. The entire dining room fell into a dead, horrifying silence.

Suddenly, a heavy thud echoed from the grand entrance behind Eleanor.

The tall double doors leading to the foyer were wide open, allowing the bright, harsh daylight from the outside world to spill into the warm, artificially lit dining room. Standing perfectly framed in that blinding light was David, Eleanor’s husband. He had just arrived home from work, still dressed in his immaculate navy-blue three-piece suit.
