Michael pointed.

"I know that man."

Arthur froze.

"Who?"

"My father."

Arthur stared at the photograph.

"Your father?"

Michael nodded.

"My father worked at a bakery before I was born."

Arthur looked closer.

The photograph was old.

The man's face was partially hidden.

But Michael recognized him.

"James Carter."

Arthur whispered the name.

"You know him?"

Arthur sat down.

"I never knew his name."

Michael stared.

"What?"

Arthur touched the photograph.

"That man gave me the bread."

Michael couldn't speak.

Arthur continued.

"I was sleeping behind the bakery."

"Why?"

"I had lost everything."

He told Michael the story.

His business had failed.

His father had died.

His fiancée had left.

He had no money.

One night, James found him behind the bakery.

Instead of calling the police, he brought him bread.

Not fresh bread.

Yesterday's bread.

Arthur smiled.

"He told me it tasted better when you're hungry."

Michael laughed through tears.

"That sounds like my father."

Arthur looked at him.

"Your father saved my life."

Michael sat down.

"Why didn't he ever tell me?"

"Because he didn't think it was important."

Michael shook his head.

"He always did that."

Arthur handed him another photograph.

This one showed James and Arthur sitting together.

Michael had never seen it.

His father had kept the secret for decades.

Arthur explained that after receiving the bread, he found work.

Then started a small restaurant.

Then another.

Then the Bellmont.

"Every building I own carries a piece of that bakery."

Michael looked at the photographs.

"You built all this because of him."

"Because of what he did."

Arthur smiled.

"And now his son walked into my hotel asking for yesterday's bread."

Michael laughed.

Neither man noticed the hotel manager standing in the doorway.

He had heard everything.

And he didn't look happy.

The manager's name was Richard Cole.

He had worked for the Bellmont for eleven years.

He was respected.

Professional.

Always polite.

But he had a secret.

For years, he had been selling discarded hotel food to a private catering company.

Food that should have been donated.

Food that Arthur believed was being thrown away.

Richard kept the money.

Thousands of dollars each month.

Michael's arrival threatened everything.

Arthur had ordered a full investigation.

Richard knew it.
