He paused, wiping a rogue tear from his cheek with the back of his hand.

“But before the impact came, he was there. Your son shoved me violently off the road with his own motorcycle. He took the hit meant for me, sending both of his bike and the truck crashing into the heavy steel guardrail.”

The biker touched his own side, wincing slightly. “I survived with some broken ribs and road burns. But your son... he never woke up again.”

The woman collapsed into the wicker porch chair behind her. She folded into herself, sobbing silently as the full, devastating weight of his sacrifice destroyed whatever remained of her composure. Her boy was gone. But he had died exactly as he had lived—giving everything he had to protect the people beside him.

Seeing the mother's absolute devastation, the biker reached a trembling hand into his leather vest pocket. He pulled out a folded, slightly bloodstained letter and gently handed it to her.

“He wrote this last year,” he whispered. “He handed it to me one night by a campfire. He told us only to deliver it if something happened to him.”

Her trembling hands could barely manage to unfold the stiff paper. Inside, written in the familiar, uneven handwriting she had spent years deciphering on homework assignments and birthday cards, were only a few simple words:

Mom, If you’re reading this, it means I finally became the man you always believed I could be.
