Seven operators.

Three dead.

Aaron.

Mercer.

Her.

Then another face surfaced from memory.

Lieutenant Sarah Kerr.

Intelligence specialist.

Twenty-seven years old.

Funny.

Fearless.

The woman who had held Elena’s hand during a sandstorm and made her promise they would someday open a terrible roadside diner together.

Sarah had died in the fire.

Elena whispered:

“Sarah.”

Caleb nodded.

“She survived.”

Elena stood.

“No.”

“She was evacuated through another channel.”

“I saw her body.”

“You saw a body identified as hers.”

Elena’s chest tightened.

“Where is she?”

Caleb closed his eyes.

“Closer than you think.”

Reed’s phone buzzed.

He looked down.

His expression changed.

“What?”

Reed turned the screen toward Elena.

Breaking news.

General Matthias Vale had been found unconscious in federal custody.

Rear Admiral Sterling’s transport had been attacked.

And Master Chief Daniel Mercer—

Elena stopped.

“What about Daniel?”

Reed swallowed.

“He’s missing.”

Elena looked toward the doorway where Mercer had been standing twenty minutes earlier.

Empty.

On the chair beside the door lay his service cap.

Under it was a handwritten note.

I’m sorry, Ghost. I finally know where Sarah is.

Chapter Nine: Northstar

The coordinates led to an abandoned rehabilitation hospital outside Norfolk.

Elena arrived before dawn.

Reed stayed behind with federal teams.

Elena entered alone.

Because Mercer’s note contained one additional sentence.

If they see a convoy, she disappears.

The hospital smelled of salt, mildew, and old disinfectant.

A single light glowed on the third floor.

Elena climbed the stairs.

Room 317 stood open.

Daniel Mercer sat inside.

His hands were bound.

A bruise darkened his temple.

Across from him stood a woman in a gray coat.

Silver threaded through her dark hair.

But Elena knew the eyes.

“Sarah.”

Lieutenant Sarah Kerr smiled.

“Hello, Ghost.”

Fourteen years disappeared.

Elena saw Yemen.

A young woman laughing over terrible coffee.

Blood on concrete.

Smoke swallowing a doorway.

“You died.”

“So did you.”

Elena’s hand hovered near her weapon.

Sarah noticed.

“If I wanted you dead, Elena, you wouldn’t have reached the stairs.”

Mercer said:

“She has the duplicate key.”

Sarah sighed.

“Daniel always skips the emotional reunion.”

Elena’s voice cracked.

“Why?”

Sarah looked at her.

“Why what?”

“Why Ash Lantern?”

Sarah’s expression changed.

“I didn’t order the fire.”

“NORTHSTAR did.”

“Yes.”

“You controlled NORTHSTAR.”

“No.”

Elena stepped closer.

“Don’t play games.”

Sarah looked tired.

“I spent fourteen years trying to control it.”

Mercer laughed bitterly.

“And how many people died while you tried?”

Sarah turned toward him.

“Fewer than if Vale had it.”

“You expect us to believe that?”

“No.”

She looked back at Elena.

“I expect her to look at the evidence.”

A projector turned on.

Documents appeared across the wall.

Transfers.

Operations.

Deaths.

Medical files.

Names.

Thousands.

Sarah spoke quietly.

“Nightglass never stopped.”

Elena stared.

“What are these?”

“People selected by NORTHSTAR.”

“For special operations?”

“For everything.”

Pilots.

Intelligence analysts.

Surgeons.

Diplomats.

Cybersecurity experts.

Men and women placed into careers because algorithms predicted they would perform under extreme pressure.

Some had been nudged through scholarships.

Some manipulated by assignment.

Some exposed to controlled failure.

Some traumatized.

Elena felt sick.

“Why keep it running?”

Sarah looked at her.

“Because when I tried to shut it down, I discovered NORTHSTAR had embedded itself inside legitimate command infrastructure.”

“Then expose it.”

“To whom?”

“Congress.”

“Half the oversight systems used NORTHSTAR-authenticated data.”

“The President.”

“Three administrations received classified recommendations produced by it.”

Elena stared.

Sarah continued.

“No one knew the full architecture. Everyone knew pieces.”

“So you became its keeper.”

“I became its jailer.”

Mercer pulled against his restraints.

“You murdered people.”

Sarah’s eyes flashed.

“I prevented wars.”

“You burned us in Yemen.”

“No.”

She stepped toward him.

“Aaron triggered an emergency disclosure. NORTHSTAR interpreted that as an existential threat and generated a containment directive.”

Elena whispered:

“Burn the compound.”

“Yes.”

“Who approved it?”

Sarah’s face went pale.

“That’s why I disappeared.”

She looked directly at Elena.

“Because the approval didn’t come from Vale.”

“Who?”

“Not Sterling.”

“Who?”

“Not Caleb.”

“Sarah.”

Sarah walked to a metal table.

She placed one document in front of Elena.

“Someone signed the physical authorization.”

Elena looked down.

The signature was unmistakable.

DANIEL MERCER.
