"I wouldn't expect you to," Maya replied, her voice carrying clearly

in the dead silence of the neighborhood. "But this is not a spar, Julian.

This is a lesson in humility."

Julian burst out laughing, a sharp, barking sound. His friends joined

in. "Humility? You're going to teach me humility? I'm a first-degree

black belt. You do park gymnastics."

"A belt only holds up your pants," Maya said calmly, stepping onto

the mat. She kicked off her shoes, leaving her barefoot. She walked to

the center and stopped, standing perfectly still, her arms resting

naturally by her sides.

Julian took his position opposite her. He dropped into a deep,

aggressive fighting stance, his hands raised, his feet bouncing

rhythmically. He looked powerful, tense, coiled like a spring ready to

explode.

Maya did not adopt a stance. She simply stood there, entirely

relaxed. To the untrained eye, she looked completely unprepared. But

Julian's academy instructor, who was watching from the sidelines,

suddenly frowned. He noticed how Maya’s weight was perfectly

distributed, how she seemed entirely connected to the ground beneath

her.

"Whenever you are ready," Maya said softly.

Julian didn't hesitate. With a loud yell, he launched himself

forward. He opened with a blistering combination—a rapid front kick

followed by a high roundhouse aimed directly at Maya's head. It was a

combination that had knocked out numerous opponents in

tournaments.

But Maya was not there.

As Julian's foot snapped toward her face, Maya didn't block or jump

back. She simply shifted her weight. She pivoted on her heel, her body

turning like a revolving door. Julian's kick sailed harmlessly through the

empty air where her head had been a fraction of a second before.

The momentum of the missed kick carried Julian forward. He

stumbled slightly, off-balance for a split second.

Maya didn't strike back. She simply watched him recover, her

expression completely neutral.

"Lucky dodge," Julian spat, his face flushing red with

embarrassment.

"No luck," Maya said quietly. "Just emptiness."

Maya reached the edge of the mat. Julian looked down at her,

genuine surprise flickering in his eyes before being quickly replaced by

a cruel sneer.

"Well, well. The mouse decided to roar," Julian said, tossing the

microphone to a friend. "Are you sure about this, Maya? I won't go easy

on you just because you're a girl, or because you're... you."

"I wouldn't expect you to," Maya replied, her voice carrying clearly

in the dead silence of the neighborhood. "But this is not a spar, Julian.

This is a lesson in humility."

aggressive fighting stance, his hands raised, his feet bouncing

rhythmically. He looked powerful, tense, coiled like a spring ready to

explode.

Furious, Julian attacked again. This time, he abandoned the flashy kicks

and closed the distance with a flurry of heavy punches. Left, right, left—

each strike packed enough power to break ribs.

Maya moved like smoke. She didn't meet force with force. As a

heavy right cross came toward her, she stepped inside his guard. She

raised her left hand, not to block, but to lightly touch his incoming

forearm. In a motion so fluid it looked like magic, she guided his

punching arm past her body, adding a slight push to his own

momentum.

Julian lurched forward, completely unable to stop his own forward

drive. As he stumbled past her, Maya extended her right foot slightly—

just a few inches.

It was one step forward. It was all she needed.

Julian tripped over her extended foot. Unable to catch himself, he

crashed heavily onto the mat, face-first. The sound of the impact echoed

through the stunned neighborhood.

For a moment, nobody breathed.

Julian pushed himself up, his nose bleeding, his eyes wide with

shock and pure rage. He scrambled to his feet and let out a primal

scream, abandoning all technique. He rushed her like a wild animal,

swinging wildly.

Maya sighed. The lesson was almost over. She stepped forward

again, into the eye of the storm. As Julian threw a massive,

uncoordinated haymaker, Maya ducked smoothly underneath it. She

stepped deeply behind his lead leg, her arm wrapping around his waist.

She didn't use muscle to throw him. She used structure. She

dropped her center of gravity, perfectly aligning her hips with his. Using

his own wild momentum against him, she applied a gentle, spiraling

upward pressure.

Julian’s feet left the ground. He was airborne for a fleeting second,

his world turning upside down. He hit the mat with a thunderous thud,

the wind knocked out of his lungs entirely. He lay there, gasping for air,

staring up at the blue summer sky in utter disbelief.

Maya stood over him. She wasn't breathing heavily. There was no

triumph in her eyes, no gloating. She simply looked down at him with

profound pity.

"Strength without yielding is just brittleness," Maya said, her voice

soft but heard by everyone in the silent crowd. "You fight the world,

Julian. You will always lose."

She turned her back on him and walked off the mat. She picked up

her shoes, walked back to her grandmother's stall, and quietly tied her

apron back on.
