Across the top:
OAKREST MEADOWS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION
Inside was a single page.
VIOLATION 0001: UNAUTHORIZED MAILBOX DESIGN
According to Section 5, Subsection D, my slate-gray mailbox violated approved community colors.
I almost laughed.
They had actually assigned a violation number to my mailbox.
The penalty was $75 per day.
I read the letter twice.
Then I opened the HOA welcome packet.
That was when I noticed the map.
It showed the Oakrest Meadows boundaries in yellow.
I traced the outer edge with my finger.
Then I found my property.
2049 Oakrest Lane.
Something looked wrong.
A faint gray line ran beside the HOA boundary.
My property sat just outside it.
Only by a small distance.
But enough.
I took out my phone and called the county property records office.
After several transfers, a clerk named Janet answered.
"Property records."
"Hi. I'm trying to confirm a jurisdiction boundary."
I gave her my address.
There was a pause.
Then keyboard clicks.
"Parcel 24C."
"Yes."
"No. That parcel is outside the Oakrest Meadows charter boundary."
My heart started beating faster.
"How far outside?"
"Twenty-seven feet."
I smiled.
"Are you certain?"
"According to our records, yes. That portion was never annexed when the subdivision expanded."
"So the HOA has no authority over my property?"
"Correct."
I thanked her.
Then I sat quietly at my kitchen table.
Twenty-seven feet.
That was all.
Twenty-seven feet between their rules and my freedom.
I thought the problem was solved.
I was wrong.
The Threat
That evening, my phone buzzed.
An email from Mara.
URGENT FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH COMMUNITY STANDARDS
Mr. Carter,
Despite multiple notices, you continue to display a mailbox that violates Oakrest Meadows standards.
The board has voted to escalate this matter under Section 9B, which grants jurisdiction over adjoining parcels sharing visible frontage.
Immediate compliance is expected.
