Thursday morning, Vivian appeared at my door.
She offered $500,000 for twelve acres.
"I think that's generous," she said.
"You don't own them."
"We can resolve this peacefully."
"No."
Her smile became thinner.
"You should reconsider. Grief can make people irrational."
I stepped closer.
"You brought police to my home after my wife's funeral."
Her eyes hardened.
"You are not emotionally equipped to manage this property."
I looked directly at her.
"You made one mistake."
She waited.
"You thought grief would make me weak."
I closed the door.
"Instead, it made me fearless."
The Farm Becomes a Crime Scene
Two days later, my irrigation system was destroyed.
Four thousand dollars' worth of equipment.
Clean cuts through the main supply lines.
Electronic controls smashed.
Whoever did it knew exactly what they were doing.
Clayton examined the tire tracks.
The tread pattern matched Vivian's Lexus.
Rebecca photographed everything.
Then Vivian escalated again.
At 7:23 the next morning, she called emergency services claiming I was spraying toxic chemicals.
Within minutes, sirens filled the valley.
Hazmat vehicles arrived.
Environmental inspectors tested the soil, water, and air.
Janet Morrison, the lead inspector, finally removed her protective mask.
"Mr. Caldwell?"
"Yes?"
"Your farm is cleaner than many city parks."
I almost laughed.
She wasn't amused.
"Someone has either made a serious mistake or deliberately wasted emergency resources."
Then Vivian arrived with another court order.
"This authorizes immediate seizure of the property," she announced.
Deputy Martinez read it.
His face changed.
"Where did you get this?"
"From the court."
I took the paper.
The signature belonged to Judge Harrison Miller.
Again.
I looked at Martinez.
"Judge Miller died six months ago."
The deputy stared at the document.
He turned to Vivian.
"Ma'am, where exactly did this come from?"
Vivian's confidence disappeared.
Then three people in plain clothes stepped forward.
One woman displayed a federal badge.
"Vivian Thornridge?"
Vivian froze.
"I'm Special Agent Rebecca Thompson."
