She never knocked.

She entered my property as though the entire neighborhood belonged to her.

Her heels clicked across the driveway.

Heads turned.

“Miles Juliette!” she shouted.

I sighed.

“Good evening, Delilah.”

“This event is unauthorized.”

“It isn't.”

“I've received complaints.”

“From who?”

She hesitated.

That told me everything.

I folded my arms.

“From you?”

Her face tightened.

“This gathering violates multiple HOA regulations.”

“Which ones?”

“Commercial activity.”

“The city has already ruled on that.”

“Noise.”

“We're within legal hours.”

“Unauthorized fundraising.”

“The organization handling donations is registered.”

“Alcohol.”

“Adults drinking beer at a private residence isn't illegal.”

She looked around desperately.

It was almost sad.

Almost.

“I'm shutting this down.”

“No.”

Her eyes widened.

“No?”

“No.”

“You cannot refuse an HOA directive.”

“I can refuse an unlawful one.”

For a second, nobody spoke.

Then Delilah reached for her phone.

“Fine.”

She dialed.

Miguel looked at me.

I looked at him.

Neither of us said anything.

Delilah spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear.

“Yes, 911? I need officers immediately.”

Miguel slowly stepped away from the Mustang.

He didn't identify himself.

He simply listened.

“There is an illegal commercial operation,” Delilah continued. “I believe the property owner is conducting an unauthorized public event and collecting money.”

She paused.

“Yes.”

Then she looked directly at me.

“And I believe there may be illegal alcohol distribution.”

Zoe whispered, “She's making this up.”

I placed a hand on her shoulder.

“Let her talk.”

Delilah continued describing the scene.

Twenty cars.

Dozens of people.

Money being collected.

An unauthorized event.

The dispatcher must have asked additional questions because Delilah suddenly pointed toward the garage.

“Yes! There is also a suspicious man here who regularly arrives in an unmarked police-style vehicle.”

Miguel's expression changed.

Just slightly.

He looked down.

I could tell he was trying not to laugh.

Delilah continued.

“I have documented this vehicle repeatedly.”

Miguel finally spoke.

“Have you?”

She turned.

For the first time, she looked directly at him.

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“Did you ever run the plate?”

“That is none of your business.”

“Probably not.”

“Who are you?”

He smiled.

“Just a car enthusiast.”

She looked him up and down.

Her expression made it clear what she thought.

Jeans.

Boots.

T-shirt.

Nothing impressive.

Nothing important.

She turned away.

That was her final mistake.

Because a few minutes later, three police vehicles arrived.

Red and blue lights reflected across the classic cars.

Children moved closer to their parents.

The music remained off.

Several guests looked uncomfortable.

The officers stepped out.

And immediately saw Miguel.

Everything changed.

The first officer stopped.

“Chief?”

Delilah froze.

Miguel sighed.

“I was hoping to avoid that tonight.”

The second officer stared at him.

“Sir, are you all right?”

Miguel looked toward Delilah.

“I believe this is the emergency.”

Nobody laughed.

Not yet.

Delilah's face went pale.

“What?”

Miguel reached into his pocket.

He removed his identification.

“Chief Miguel Rodriguez.”

The silence that followed was almost perfect.

Delilah stared at the badge.

Then at him.

Then at the arriving officers.

“You're…”

“The suspicious man with the unmarked vehicle.”

A few people began laughing.

Delilah's face turned red.

“I didn't know.”

Miguel nodded.

“I noticed.”

She looked around desperately.

“But that's irrelevant. This event is illegal.”

Miguel looked toward me.

“Miles?”

I handed him the permit folder.

He examined it.

The officers did the same.

Everything was there.

Event documentation.

Business licensing.

Fire safety approval.

Charity registration information.

Donation records.

Delilah stood in the middle of the driveway as the evidence dismantled every accusation she had made.
