Instead, Claire had simply filed the document.
Because she knew something Margaret didn't.
The more Margaret signed, the more evidence she created.
The more official she made her threats, the easier they became to prove.
The room emptied slowly.
Before leaving, Ted stopped beside us.
He looked at Margaret.
Then at Claire.
Then at me.
He nodded.
I knew what he meant.
Let her keep going.
She was building the case for us.
The Third Call
Three days later, Margaret called 911 again.
This time she said:
“There is an unauthorized woman at this address. She refuses to vacate. The HOA has issued a formal removal order. I need her physically removed.”
The call was recorded.
Two officers were dispatched.
One was a young officer named Daniel Reed.
The other was his partner.
I didn't know either of them that morning.
I only knew that Claire was in the garden.
The police cruiser rolled into our driveway.
Margaret stood six feet away.
She held the orange notice.
“You need to vacate this property immediately,” she told Claire.
Then the officer approached.
He stopped.
He looked at Claire.
Three seconds.
Then his expression changed.
“Colonel Calloway.”
Margaret blinked.
Claire stood straight.
“Officer.”
The officer's posture changed.
His shoulders moved back.
His voice became formal.
He turned toward Margaret.
“Ma'am, this is my commanding officer.”
Silence.
Margaret stared at him.
Then at Claire.
Then back at the officer.
“I have documentation,” she said.
“The board voted.”
“She has no right—”
The officer's partner checked the property record.
“Both homeowners appear on the county record.”
Margaret shook her head.
“I don't care who she is. This is HOA-managed property.”
Claire finally spoke.
“Officer, please document the call in full.”
Margaret looked at her.
Claire continued.
“Please note that this is my legal residence. I am listed on the deed and mortgage as co-owner.”
She paused.
“This is the third police contact in nine weeks initiated by the same individual regarding this address.”
The officer wrote everything down.
Margaret went silent.
Then he looked at her.
“Ma'am, I want you to understand something.”
His voice was calm.
“Filing a false police report is a criminal offense.”
Margaret swallowed.
“Repeated false emergency calls regarding the same individual may constitute harassment.”
He paused.
“Do you want to formalize your complaint today?”
