I didn't charge anyone.

I simply helped.

That was when Brenda first noticed me.

And that was when my problems began.

The Woman With the Clipboard

Brenda Ashworth had been HOA president for less than a year.

That was more than enough time for Willowbrook to change.

Before Brenda, the HOA had been run by Mrs. Henderson, a retired teacher who believed an HOA existed for one reason:

Keep the neighborhood functioning.

Mow your lawn.

Pay your dues.

Don't create problems for your neighbors.

Brenda had a different philosophy.

She called it “elevated community standards.”

The Rodriguez family called it harassment.

They received multiple warnings because they owned two vehicles.

Mr. Orion was fined because his vegetable garden was “visually inconsistent.”

A young Black couple was repeatedly warned about a basketball hoop while another family had one without receiving a single notice.

Brenda called it enforcement.

Everyone else called it selective enforcement.

Then she discovered my fuel system.

She arrived one morning wearing white designer heels.

“Mr. Kellerman.”

“Brenda.”

“I have several questions.”

“About?”

She pointed toward the workshop.

“The fuel installation.”

“It is permitted.”

“Under what authority?”

I gave her the permit number.

She wrote it down.

“What about zoning?”

“Approved.”

“Environmental compliance?”

“Current.”

“Insurance?”

“Covered.”

She stared at me.

“You've prepared for this.”

“I prepare for everything.”

Her smile disappeared.

“Community resources should benefit everyone.”

“The fuel is mine.”

She stepped closer.

“You live in Willowbrook.”

“My property borders Willowbrook.”

“That's not the same thing.”

“Exactly.”

She walked away.

Three days later, I received a violation notice.

$500 FINE — UNAUTHORIZED COMMERCIAL ACTIVITY

I read it twice.

Then I laughed.

Brenda claimed my private fuel system constituted an illegal commercial operation.

She claimed it created “unfair residential advantages.”

She claimed it damaged property values.

She claimed it created safety risks.

I spent three hours reading the HOA covenants.

Then I prepared a response.

Permits.

Inspection records.

Property documents.

Insurance confirmation.

Agricultural-use records.
