“Keys. Now.”
“Sure. Hand over the pool keys.”
That was the first thing Officer Langford said when he stepped onto my property.
Not hello.
Not can we talk?
Not even a question.
An order.
He stood at the edge of my driveway in his uniform, one hand resting near his belt, his expression carefully arranged into the look of someone accustomed to being obeyed.
A few feet behind him stood his wife, Karen.
Her arms were crossed.
She was smiling.
It was the kind of smile that told me she believed the argument had already been decided before I had even spoken.
I looked at the officer.
Then at Karen.
“You really sent your husband for this?”
Karen's smile widened.
“You've ignored three notices.”
“I've answered every legitimate notice.”
“You refused to cooperate.”
“I refused to hand over something that belongs to me.”
Officer Langford held out his hand.
“The pool keys.”
I stared at him.
“The pool is on my property.”
Karen stepped forward.
“The pool belongs to the community.”
“No,” I said calmly. “It doesn't.”
Her expression hardened.
“Don't play dumb, Cole.”
“I’m not.”
“You've been warned.”
“By whom?”
“By the HOA.”
“You mean by you.”
Her husband shifted his weight.
“Sir, let's not make this difficult.”
I almost laughed.
“You're standing on my property in uniform demanding access to a private pool because your wife says the HOA owns it.”
“That isn't what I'm saying.”
“Then what exactly are you saying?”
He looked toward Karen.
She answered for him.
“You either cooperate, or we escalate.”
There it was.
The real message.
Not about safety.
Not about water.
Not about regulations.
Power.
Karen wanted me to understand that she believed she could make me surrender simply because she had decided I should.
I looked at Officer Langford.
“You might want to be careful about who you're threatening, Officer.”
His eyes narrowed.
“You threatening me?”
“No.”
I paused.
“I'm warning you.”
