When Monica reached for the handles, Nia locked her wheels. “Don’t touch my chair.”
Instead of backing away, Monica had reached down, placed her hands beneath Nia’s arms, and lifted her. Nia screamed as she was carelessly deposited onto the wooden bench. Her left hip struck the hard seat, and her foot twisted awkwardly beneath her.
Monica rolled the chair to her son. “Sit down.”
“Mom, no,” Tyler had pleaded, backing away. “That’s her chair.”
“She can share for one minute.”
Monica forced Tyler into the seat just as Marcus reached the scene.
Now, standing toe-to-toe with Monica, Marcus struggled to contain his rage. “You removed a disabled child from medical equipment.”
“Disabled children should learn to share like everyone else,” Monica replied coldly.
Several parents gasped.
“Don’t accuse me of mistreating my son,” Monica added, tightening her grip on her HOA manual. “I am president of the Lakeside Meadows Homeowners Association.”
“This is a public school,” Marcus said. “And none of that makes my daughter’s wheelchair yours.”
Monica removed her sunglasses, her pale blue eyes narrowed with contempt. “Your attitude explains why your daughter acts so helpless. Maybe if you encouraged exercise instead of letting her sit all day, she wouldn’t depend on that chair.”
The Lines in the Sand
Before Marcus could respond, a commanding voice cut through the crowd.
“What happened?”
School counselor Denise Henderson approached alongside Vice Principal Elena Rodriguez. Denise, a tall, athletic Black woman who had served at Cedar Grove for fifteen years, took in the scene: Nia distressed on the bench, Tyler sitting uncomfortably in the custom chair, and Monica standing defensively with her handbook.
Monica immediately shifted her tone. “Thank goodness. This man is threatening me because my son borrowed an unused wheelchair.”
