The Polish and the Prowler

It all kicked off on a crisp Saturday morning. I was outside giving my truck a wash—a deep blue Ford I’d spent years customizing piece by piece. Every bolt, every chrome accent, every engine upgrade had a memory attached. It wasn’t just a vehicle; it was a physical record of my blood, sweat, and weekends. It was a part of who I was.

As I was drying off the hood, I caught sight of my HOA-obsessed neighbor across the street. Let’s call her Karen. She stood on her immaculate lawn with her arms crossed, lips pursed so tight you’d think she’d just bitten straight into a lemon. I ignored her at first, figuring she was just nursing her usual bitterness, but sure enough, she strutted across the asphalt with that fake, sugary smile I’d seen too many times before.

"Your truck is just sitting here all the time," she said, tilting her head with manufactured concern. "My son could really use a reliable ride. You should do the right thing and sell it to us."

I almost dropped my microfiber towel. This wasn't some rusted-out beater abandoned in a field; this was my life’s work. I laughed, assuming it was a joke, but Karen's fake smile vanished instantly. Her voice turned sharp, venomous.

"Don't be selfish," she hissed. "He needs it more than you. If you don't agree to hand it over, I'll have to take other steps."

Red, Blue, and Ridiculous

I brushed off her threat, assuming it was just Karen being Karen. That was until two days later, when I pulled into my driveway and found flashing red and blue lights waiting for me.
