Karen thought she had this situation locked down. What she didn't know was that Daniel wasn't just my brother-in-law; he was the man who had helped me with the truck's paperwork, and more importantly, he was a state attorney.

"I'll be there in ten minutes," Daniel said over the phone.

While we waited, Karen kept rambling to the increasingly uncomfortable police officers about "neighborhood fairness." But ten minutes later, a sleek black SUV pulled up. Out stepped Daniel, wearing a sharp suit with his badge clipped to his belt.

The atmosphere shifted instantly. The officers straightened their posture. Karen, attempting to pivot, pasted on her fake smile.

"Oh, thank goodness you're here!" she gushed. "You must be the investigator. Finally, someone who can see the truth about this stolen vehicle."

Daniel didn't even blink at her performance. He walked straight to the officers, flashed his credentials, and reviewed my paperwork. He then turned to Karen, his expression ice-cold.

"Ma'am," Daniel said flatly. "Everything checks out. The truck is his. End of story. Furthermore, filing a false police report is a criminal offense. Are you really ready to deal with those consequences?"

Karen’s face drained of color. The officers closed their notebooks, glaring at her. She muttered a desperate threat about calling the HOA to deal with me, but Daniel quickly reminded her that the HOA had zero jurisdiction over the law. Humiliated, Karen and her son retreated.
