“Where did this come from?”
“It proves ownership.”
Sterling shook his head.
“It proves someone forged my signature.”
Hadley became angry.
“You're abusing your position!”
Sterling remained calm.
“That is why I'm not investigating this.”
Brennan looked at him.
“You already contacted Major Crimes?”
“Yes.”
Hadley's expression changed.
“Major Crimes?”
An unmarked sedan turned into the street.
Detective Holt Bramwell stepped out.
He walked directly toward them.
“Mrs. Lockwood.”
Hadley swallowed.
“What is this?”
Holt held out his hand.
“The bill of sale.”
She hesitated.
Bryson whispered, “Mom.”
“Quiet.”
Holt waited.
Finally, Hadley handed over the paper.
He placed it inside an evidence sleeve.
“Who prepared this?”
“My attorney.”
“Which attorney?”
She didn't answer.
Holt looked toward Bryson.
“Did you sign it?”
Bryson looked at his mother.
“My mom told me—”
“Don't say anything!” Hadley snapped.
Holt nodded.
“That may be the first useful advice you've given him today.”
Sirens sounded in the distance.
Hadley's confidence disappeared.
This wasn't about the Mustang anymore.
It was about everything else.
The Search Warrants
Sheriff's vehicles arrived minutes later.
Two deputies approached the Lockwood house.
Another team headed toward Whit's office.
Hadley watched them in disbelief.
“What are they doing?”
Holt answered.
“Executing search warrants.”
“For what?”
“Financial records. HOA documents. Electronic devices. Business records.”
“This is insane!”
