I walked to the podium carrying the same manila envelope that had followed me through the entire battle.

I placed the 1924 trust documents on the table.

Caroline Merritt stood behind me.

"I represent the state office responsible for Agricultural Heritage Trust Number 007," she said.

"The Thornfield property is protected under a valid state trust established nearly one hundred years ago."

Vivian jumped to her feet.

"This is absurd!"

I pressed play.

Richmond's voice filled the courtroom.

"Sell the property."

Then came the threat.

The offer.

The $1.2 million.

The promise of endless litigation.

Vivian's face turned white.

"This is character assassination!"

Then someone stepped forward from the back of the room.

Dark suit.

Federal badge.

Agent Patricia Valdez.

"Mrs. Blackthorne," she said calmly, "you're under arrest."

The courtroom erupted.

The Fall of the Blackthornes

Vivian froze.

"For what?"

"Conspiracy, extortion, fraud, and related federal violations."

Two agents moved toward Richmond.

He tried to leave.

They stopped him at the courthouse exit.

Vivian began shouting.

"This is political!"

Nobody answered.

"This farm is a danger!"

Nobody moved.

"My community has rights!"

Agent Valdez looked at her.

"You should have considered that before ordering people onto private property."

The handcuffs clicked.

For three years, Vivian had treated everyone around her like pieces on a chessboard.

Neighbors.
