"Well, buddy."

I sighed.

"We've been here ten minutes."

He wagged his tail.

"And we've already found the enemy."

The First Fine

I spent the rest of the day unpacking.

At four-thirty, I sent the HOA management company everything they needed.

My doctor's letter.

Atlas's vaccination records.

His service documentation.

A polite explanation of his role.

I asked for a reasonable accommodation.

I expected someone at the management company to intervene.

Instead, five minutes after five, a private security guard arrived.

He taped an envelope to my door.

Inside was my first violation notice.

FINE: $500.

REASON: PROHIBITED BREED.

REMEDY: IMMEDIATE REMOVAL OF ANIMAL.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

The board does not recognize psychiatric service animals for prohibited breeds.

I read it twice.

Then I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because sometimes absurdity becomes so complete that laughter is the only reasonable response.

Atlas was lying on the kitchen floor chewing a toy.

"You hear that?"

He looked up.

"Apparently you're illegal."

His tail thumped once.

The next morning, the harassment began.

Patty photographed Atlas using the bathroom in my own backyard.

She called it an environmental violation.

Then came a fine for my lawn.

Another for noise.

Another because an Amazon driver had stopped in front of my house.

And every morning—

another $500 fine for Atlas.

By Friday, I supposedly owed thousands of dollars.

I paid exactly zero.

Instead, I bought a three-ring binder.

I labeled it:

THE PATTY FILE

Every photograph.

Every letter.

Every fine.

Every threat.

Everything went inside.
