"Here is the property survey from the county," I said, opening the binder. "Here is the building permit in my name. Here are the maintenance records spanning twelve years. And here," I pointed to a flash drive tucked into a sleeve, "are seventy-two pieces of video evidence showing this woman breaking through my fence and using my property without permission."
The taller officer reviewed the property survey. He looked at the permit. He looked at the fence. Then, he looked at Sandra.
"Ma'am," the officer said, his tone shifting from inquisitive to stern. "This is clearly her property. Why did you call us here?"
Sandra’s face flushed a deep, mottled red. The reality distortion field she had lived inside for two years was abruptly collapsing under the weight of municipal paperwork. "She... she shouldn't be allowed to just hoard it!" Sandra stammered. "It's not fair!"
"Fairness is not a legal statute," the officer replied. "Trespassing is. And filing a false police report is."
The officers did not arrest Sandra that day, though they threatened to if they ever had to return to this address. They officially trespassed her from my property, explaining in very small, very clear words that if she so much as touched my fence again, she would leave in handcuffs.
I watched her walk back to her house, her posture deflated, the sheer weight of consequence finally anchoring her to the real world.
The next week, I hired a crew to replace the tile line. I had the pool refilled, balanced, and ready by June.
I still drink my coffee by the kitchen window on Saturday mornings. Occasionally, I look out at the water, reflecting the morning sun, and then I look at the new, reinforced, eight-foot-tall fence that now borders the eastern edge of my property.
The water is quiet. The cameras record nothing but the wind. My ledger, finally, is perfectly balanced.
