Japanese Billionaire CEO Orders In a Foreign Language To Humiliate Black Waitress—Her Reply...
Chapter 5
His hands trembled.
Then he looked at Amara.
She expected him to thank her.
Instead, he said something else.
“I owe you an apology.”
Amara crossed her arms.
“For which part?”
His expression softened.
“For believing that your uniform told me who you were.”
The hallway became quiet.
Amara looked at him for a long moment.
Then she nodded.
“Good.”
Takamori almost smiled.
“That is all?”
“For now.”
Outside, the first light of morning appeared over New York.
But the danger was not over.
The flash drive contained enough evidence to destroy powerful people.
And powerful people did not surrender quietly.
Amara had started the evening carrying menus to table seven.
Now she was standing in a hallway beside a billionaire, his missing daughter, and evidence of a corporate conspiracy that could shake an international empire.
She looked at Kenji Takamori.
“Mr. Takamori.”
“Yes?”
“Next time you want to test whether a waitress understands you…”
He waited.
Amara smiled.
“Try ordering dinner.”
And for the first time that night, the Japanese billionaire laughed.
But neither of them knew that by sunrise, someone would already be searching for the flash drive.
And this time, the target would not be Kenji.
It would be Amara.
By eight o’clock that morning, Amara Bennett had been awake for almost twenty-four hours.
She should have been home.
She should have been sleeping beneath the thin gray blanket on her bed, with her phone turned off and the curtains closed against the morning sun.
Instead, she sat inside a private conference room on the thirty-second floor of a Manhattan office building, staring at a flash drive that seemed far too small to hold the power it possessed.
Kenji Takamori sat across from her.
Beside him was Aiko.
The difference between them was impossible to ignore.
Kenji looked as though he had aged ten years overnight. His perfectly tailored suit was wrinkled. His silver hair was no longer perfectly arranged. The man who had entered Le Jardin Bleu with the confidence of someone accustomed to controlling every room now looked like a father who had nearly lost his daughter.
Aiko, however, looked determined.
Afraid—but determined.
The flash drive sat between them.
“Open it,” Amara said.
Kenji looked at her.
“You understand what this could mean?”
“Yes.”
“If the information is authentic, several members of my executive board may be involved in criminal activity.”
“And if it isn’t?”
“Then my daughter may have risked her life for nothing.”
Aiko folded her arms.
“I didn’t risk my life for nothing.”
Kenji looked at her.
She met his eyes.
The silence between them was heavy.
Amara could feel that this argument had been waiting years to happen.
Finally, Aiko spoke.
“You never trusted me.”
Kenji looked down.
“I trusted you.”
“No. You loved me. That is different.”
The words landed hard.
Kenji did not defend himself.
Amara watched him carefully.
Perhaps, she thought, this was the first real conversation they had ever had.
Aiko continued.
“You decided what my life would be before I was old enough to choose it. University. The company. Marriage. Public appearances. Every decision was already waiting for me.”
“I wanted to protect you.”
“From what?”
Kenji said nothing.
Aiko laughed bitterly.
“From making the same mistakes you made?”
Amara looked away.
This was no longer about corporate documents.
It was about something much older.
Something deeper.
Kenji finally spoke.
“I grew up with nothing.”
His voice was quiet.
“When I was your age, my father worked fourteen hours a day. He died believing he had failed his family.”
Aiko’s expression softened slightly.
Kenji continued.
“I promised myself that my daughter would never experience that kind of uncertainty.”
“And instead,” Aiko said, “you made sure I could never make a decision without you.”
Kenji closed his eyes.
Amara had no sympathy for arrogance.
But she understood regret.
There was something almost painful about watching a person realize that the thing they had called love had sometimes felt like a cage to someone else.
A security officer entered the room.
“Mr. Takamori.”
Kenji stood.
“What is it?”
“There’s someone downstairs asking for Miss Bennett.”
Amara frowned.
“Who?”
The officer hesitated.
“He says his name is Daniel Cross.”
Everyone in the room froze.
Aiko immediately stood.
“Don’t let him up.”
“Wait,” Amara said.
Kenji turned toward her.
“You know him?”
“No.”
“Then this is not your decision.”
Amara stepped closer.
“It might be.”
Kenji stared at her.
For the first time since they met, Amara did not care that he was a billionaire.
She was tired.
Hungry.
And increasingly annoyed that everyone seemed to be making decisions around her.
“If Daniel Cross wanted to disappear,” she said, “he wouldn’t walk into your building and ask for me by name.”
Kenji considered that.
Then he nodded.
“Bring him upstairs.”
Five minutes later, Daniel Cross entered the conference room.
He was younger than Amara expected—perhaps thirty-five. He wore jeans, a dark jacket, and the exhausted expression of someone who had spent too many nights looking over his shoulder.
The moment he saw the flash drive, his face changed.
“You found it.”
Aiko stepped between him and the table.
“How did you know?”
Daniel looked at her.
“I’ve been trying to find you.”
Kenji’s security officer moved closer.
Daniel raised both hands.
“I’m not here to hurt anyone.”
“Then why did people see you with men following my daughter?” Kenji demanded.
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“Because those men were following me.”
The room became silent.
Daniel looked directly at Kenji.
“You still don’t understand, do you?”
Kenji’s jaw tightened.
“Explain.”
Daniel pointed at the flash drive.
“That contains evidence of money being moved through companies connected to your own executives. But that’s only half of it.”
