For a brief, dangerous, split-second, Marcus let his guard down. He looked up, and his piercing, dark eyes met Victor’s through the black chain-link fence of the cage. He didn't look away.

It was a mistake.

Victor, still hyped up on violence and adrenaline, scanning the room for anyone challenging his dominance, locked onto the older man’s gaze. A cruel, predatory smile slowly spread across the fighter's face.

"Hey! Hey, old man!" Victor barked, his voice cutting through the tense silence of the gym. He pointed a heavily taped finger directly at Marcus. "Yeah, you. The guy with the mop. You’ve been staring at me all week. You got a problem? You think you can do better than these kids?"

Marcus exhaled slowly. He looked down at the floor, attempting to defuse the situation. He relaxed his grip on the mop. "I'm just doing my job, Mr. Mallory," Marcus said, his voice even, calm, and respectful. "I have to clean the mats before the evening classes start. Just let me get back to work."

"No, no, no," Victor laughed, motioning for the cage door to be opened. He stepped out, his bare feet slapping against the rubber floor as he marched toward Marcus. The crowd of fighters, coaches, and gym members parted for him like the Red Sea. "Don't play coy with me, old man. You’re always watching us. Judging us. I see you in the corner, shadowboxing with that damn broom when you think nobody's looking. Come on in here. Let's see what you got."

"I don't fight," Marcus said, taking a small step back, keeping his eyes on Victor's chest rather than his eyes, a defensive habit ingrained from years on the street. "I'm fifty-five years old. I clean the toilets."

"I'm not asking, janitor," Victor sneered, stepping aggressively into Marcus's personal space. The height difference wasn't massive, but Victor's heavily muscled frame, dripping with sweat, loomed threateningly over Marcus's lean, older physique. The smell of Victor's arrogance and adrenaline was overwhelming. "You think you're better than me because you sit back and judge? Here’s the deal. You step into that boxing ring over there, and you move around with me for three minutes. One round. If you don't, I go straight into the owner's office right now, and I tell him I caught you digging through my locker, stealing cash."

A murmur of shock rippled through the gym. It was a sick, baseless, and incredibly cruel threat. But everyone in the room knew it would work. The owner would fire Marcus on the spot, no questions asked, to keep Victor happy.

"You’ll be out on the street by dinner," Victor whispered, leaning in close. "And I'll make sure you don't get a job anywhere else in this town."

Marcus stood perfectly still. The ambient noise of the gym seemed to fade away. He looked at Victor. He didn't see the tattoos, the intimidating glare, or the impressive musculature. He saw a man who shifted his weight too heavily onto his front foot when he was agitated. He saw a man whose chin was held far too high.

Marcus thought about his small, one-bedroom apartment. He thought about his electricity bill, and the quiet, peaceful anonymity of his current life. He should walk away. He should just quit.
