“What did you find?”
“A highly organized extortion and burglary ring,” Ralston explained. “Lawrence Vance's business was failing. Monica used her position on the HOA to identify homes with older AC units. She would artificially trigger failures during extreme heat waves. Because she had a scanner for emergency services and knew neighborhood schedules, she knew exactly when people would be desperate.”
Ryan shook his head. “So she destroys the unit, forces the family out into the heat, and her brother swoops in to charge them triple for an 'emergency' replacement?”
“That was the primary scam,” Ralston nodded. “But it gets worse. For families who had to evacuate entirely—like they planned for you, knowing your daughter was medically vulnerable—Lawrence had a secondary crew. While the house was empty and cooling down, they would go in to 'assess the ductwork' and strip the home of jewelry, cash, and small electronics. They targeted you specifically yesterday because they knew you were distracted with a sick child.”
Ryan remembered Monica's cold, calculating stare at Emily's window. She was waiting for us to leave so they could raid the house.
“She underestimated the portable AC unit,” Ryan said quietly.
“Exactly. It ruined their timeline. When she saw the room was still cool, she panicked. She didn't expect you to come back so quickly, and she certainly didn't expect to be caught on a hidden backyard camera.”
Two weeks later, the intense summer heat wave finally broke, replaced by the cool, crisp breezes of early autumn.
Emily was fully recovered, back to playing in the backyard and complaining about her upcoming math homework. The side gate was now secured with a heavy-duty smart padlock, and three new, high-definition security cameras monitored the perimeter of the Keller property.
Beside the house sat a brand-new, ultra-efficient central air conditioning unit, installed personally by Miles Chen.
Monica Vance and her brother Lawrence were both in county lockup, denied bail due to the sheer volume of fraud, reckless endangerment, and burglary charges stacking up against them. The "neighborhood heat-response committee" had been exposed for the predatory fiction it was.
Sitting on the patio with a glass of iced tea, Ryan watched Emily sketch in her notebook. He listened to the quiet, steady hum of the new AC unit. It was a comforting sound—a sound of safety, of a boundary protected.
He pulled out his phone, opened the security app, and watched the live feed of his empty, peaceful yard. He smiled, closed the app, and went inside to help his daughter with her math.
