Frowning, Caleb swiped open the security application. The live feed from his backyard camera buffered for a second before snapping into crisp, high-definition focus.
His neighbor, Marlene Voss, was climbing over the cedar fence. She had a heavy steel wrench hanging from a tool belt, and two white plastic buckets were precariously balanced on the top rail. Caleb watched in stunned silence as the seventy-year-old woman lowered herself into his yard with surprising agility, picked up the buckets, and walked directly toward his pool filter.
Caleb sat upright, the morning chill hitting his bare chest.
For several seconds, his brain completely failed to process what he was seeing. Marlene was the neighborhood grandmother—a woman who baked snickerdoodles for block parties and meticulously pruned her hydrangeas. But the woman on the screen wore heavy-duty rubber boots, thick disposable gloves, and a pale green windbreaker. Her silver hair was tucked tightly beneath a dark baseball cap.
