"And you did?"

"I didn't have much choice."

Terrence looked at his hands.

"I kept telling him I wasn't doing anything."

"Was Mason Reed there?"

"No."

"Who else?"

Terrence hesitated.

"Another officer."

"Who?"

"Officer Grant."

Danielle wrote it down.

"What happened next?"

"They searched my truck."

"Did they find anything?"

"No."

"Then why were you arrested?"

Terrence looked directly at her.

"Because they found something they said was stolen."

"What?"

"A power tool."

"Was it yours?"

"No."

"Did they accuse you of stealing it?"

"Yes."

"Where did they claim it came from?"

Terrence's expression changed.

"Your house."

Danielle felt a chill.

"What?"

"They said the tool came from the house you're living in now."

She sat very still.

"Was the previous owner there?"

"No."

"Did anyone identify you?"

"No."

"Then how?"

Terrence leaned back.

"That's the question I never got answered."

Danielle pulled out her notebook.

"What happened after the arrest?"

"I spent the night in jail."

"Charges?"

"Never filed."

"Why?"

Terrence smiled without humor.

"Because the homeowner came to the station."

"David Mercer?"

"Yes."

"What did he say?"

Terrence looked toward the window.

"He said the tool wasn't his."

Danielle's pen stopped.

"Then what happened?"

"They let me go."

"Did anyone apologize?"

Terrence laughed.

"No."

"Did you file a complaint?"

"I tried."

"Against Keller?"

"Against everyone."

"What happened?"

"It disappeared."

Danielle closed her notebook.

"Do you still have a copy?"

Terrence looked at her.

"I kept everything."

He disappeared into a hallway.

Five minutes later, he returned with a cardboard box.

Inside were copies of reports, letters, photographs, and a handwritten statement.

Danielle spent an hour reviewing them.

Then she found it.

A discrepancy.

The police report said Keller had arrived at 7:18 p.m.

A dispatch log showed Keller was not assigned until 7:31.

That meant the report had been altered.

Danielle looked at Terrence.

"Did you know this?"

"No."

She showed him.

His face went pale.

"What does that mean?"

"It means someone changed the timeline."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

Terrence leaned forward.

"You think this is connected to yesterday?"

"I don't know."

"But you think it could be."

Danielle didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

When she returned to Briarwood Lane that evening, Walter was waiting.

"You found something."

Danielle nodded.

"Something serious."

Before she could explain, a black SUV stopped outside.

A man stepped out.

He wore a gray suit.

No police insignia.

No identification.

He walked toward Danielle's gate.

"Ms. Brooks?"

"Yes."

"My name is Samuel Grant."

Danielle froze.

"Grant?"

His expression changed.

"You've heard my name."

"I've read a report."

He looked at Walter.

Then back at Danielle.

"I think we should talk."

"About Terrence Cole?"

Grant's face tightened.

"Not here."

Danielle crossed her arms.

"Then where?"

He lowered his voice.

"Somewhere cameras aren't watching."

Walter stepped forward.

"No."

Grant looked at him.

"Excuse me?"

Walter pointed toward Danielle.

"She's not going anywhere with you."

Grant smiled.

"You don't understand."

Walter answered calmly.

"Then explain it."

Grant stared at him.

Then he looked at Danielle.

"You have no idea how many people want this buried."

Danielle's eyes narrowed.

"Then maybe you should tell me why."

Grant said nothing.

He returned to his SUV.

Before leaving, he looked back.

"Stop digging."

Danielle watched him disappear.

Walter shook his head.

"That sounded like a threat."

"It was."

"What are you going to do?"

Danielle looked at the house.

"Dig deeper."

By Friday morning, Danielle had built a timeline.

Three years ago:

Terrence Cole arrested.

Ryan Keller listed as responding officer.

Samuel Grant involved.

Evidence allegedly found inside Terrence's truck.

No charges filed.

Complaint disappeared.

Yesterday:

Danielle stopped outside her own home.

Keller involved again.

Same address.

Same unexplained suspicion.

Same pattern of escalation.

It was too much to dismiss.

Danielle contacted a former colleague at the U.S. Attorney's Office.
